So why is this in Melbourne? I love Melbourne but seems like more action in Sydney right now. Is that the reason?

we chose Melbourne in 2007 because there were many other web events in Sydney this year, and we wanted to give the vibrant web community in Melbourne to chance to meet up face to face. REMIX 2008 will most likely to be in Sydney though.
