Amy1022....would need to know exact wording of riddle but N-spot-100-monks have to realise whether they themselves have spots.....the working principle is that you can determine the solution to the n-monk problem (n-1)-spots problem if you know solution to N-1 monk-N-2- spots problem, (other scenarios redundant, like N-monk-N-3-spots))...........mathematical method is to understand the solution to the N-spots-100-monk problem is to make 2 groups who count spots as M and when Mth day (or 100-M variation in riddle) comes, they see if their count has changed because someone commit suicide, if not then they are marked......eg....for 2 monks, if 1 have spots then 2ndrd person sees 1, but the spotted monk sees none thinking he is the one and he commits suicide, second person counts again next day and gets technically different count.
SO, for 2 monks with 1 spot, non-spotted monks counts were different for 1st and 2nd day and spotted monk realized on 1st day that he is spotted...
similarly for 3 monks where 2 are spotted, 2 spotters will realised on 2nd day that they are both spotted (else there was only 1 spotted, other person would have committed suicide on 1st day). counts will change for 3rd person between 2nd and 3rd day.
repeating this for 100 monks, N spotters will realize on Nth day that they are spotted and counts will change for remaining 100-N monks between N and N+1 days
again there are million flavors of riddle out there. hope this helps
