A man picks up a phone, dials a specific number, waits until someone answers and then quickly hangs up. Why?

    2008-10-09 16:31:00.0

Is it a well known number, like 911?

    2008-10-09 16:33:03.0

Did he have a specific reason for dialing the number?
    Was it malicious?

    2008-10-09 16:33:30.0

    ?Heyllooooo

    y u leaf ubr quik?

    2008-10-09 16:56:53.0

    Was this phone working properly?
Did another human pick up at the other end? Robot?
(If Robot) Did he hang up out of anger of not reaching a human?
    Was this a normal man?
Would other people in his situation have done this, or was he derranged?
Was he in prison/ police holding station and was getting his one phone call?
Would something bad have happened to him if he didn't hang up? Something unpleasant to him? To someone else?

    2008-10-09 17:18:12.0

Ooh, was he getting his one phone call from a police station, but he dialed the wrong number (say, of his ex Tongue out) and quickly hung up once he realized his mistake in order to make the police think that nobody had picked up so he's get another chance to dial?

    2008-10-09 17:21:43.0

Is it a phaek (fake) phone?

Is there cocaine in the digit buttons, and pressing them in a certain order (which also happens to be somebody's number) will open the phone casing revealing the cocaine (or other substance) once the other person picks up?

    2008-10-09 17:23:30.0

Is it like the execution one, and this is the mayor calling in (over a secure line) to give a reprieve, but the lights go out right after the other person answers, so he just hangs up?

    2008-10-09 17:25:18.0

Did this happen in real life?

    Is it plausible?

    Possible?

    2008-10-09 17:32:32.0

My AP teacher knows how to humiliate people in a very funny way... we were talking about bezerkers (somehow) and my teacher said:

"So tomorrow I'm going to bring in halucinogenic mushrooms so you can all feel like the Viking bezerkers. Just watch, [Synth] will come in tomorrow completely naked and painted blue, foaming at the mouth."

*cue 2 minutes of insane laughter*

    2008-10-09 17:35:43.0

    Hehe excuses, excuses.

And no, he's really funny. You do need, however, to take everything he says with a grain of salt. He calls us complete idiots, but in a very nice way Tongue out

Plus, it's always great to hear someone go up to retrieve a test and hear him yell "56%!", only to tell them their real grade of ~93% after they cry/ look horrified. Laughing

    2008-10-09 18:39:57.0

along the lines of what synth was saying.....

was he going to going to order a call-girl and then...

    either..

    changed his mind?

    or

it was some sort of pre-set signal?

    2008-10-12 14:26:09.0

along the lines of what bluegirl was saying...

or was it a cop at the other end?

Not sure why he's want it to be a cop, but.. yea.

    2008-10-12 14:31:00.0

ooh...along the lines of what synth said...

was he a cop and this was some sort of sting.....he was giving the pre-set symbol?

    2008-10-12 15:33:20.0

dammit, I think I know this one.

    2008-10-12 15:58:54.0

alright, maybe I don't.  But it fits into the class of riddles I have filed under "A man in a hotel room calls..."

Most of these should be yes:

Is this at night? in the morning? evening?

Was the man trying to accomplish something with this call?

did he accomplish something with this call?

was it to wake someone up?

or was it to quiet a noisy neighbor?

    2008-10-12 16:02:10.0

is he the wake-up call guy?

    2008-10-12 16:03:14.0

    (sorry dj)

    2008-10-12 16:03:29.0

Ohh, I thought DJ was talking about the riddle before with the guy waking up everybody in the hotel but his deaf wife, then I remembered that he did it with a car horn and not a phone, and bluegirl responded...

I think, then, that blueg has it.

    2008-10-12 16:08:22.0

Was it a coincidence they were both in the same hotel? Yes, I suppose (unless they knew each other)

    Is this at night? Yes

Was the man trying to accomplish something with this call? Yes

did he accomplish something with this call? Yes

was it to wake someone up? Yes

Was it to quiet a noisy neighbor? Yes

Is he the wake-up call guy? No

    2008-10-12 21:09:54.0

Duke, do you know it? If not I might consider giving you 1/2 points!

    2008-10-12 21:12:33.0

Here's the thing: I don't know if I know it.  That sounds odd, but it's true.  I know several riddles involving a hotel and a phone.  There are only two issue preventing me from being certain:

    1.  I can't read your mind, so I don't know which of the hotel/phone riddles this one could be.

    2.  Those hotel riddles with the phones?  I can't remember the answers to them...

so, really, "dammit, I think I know this one" is more like "this sounds familiar, and there is a chance I've seen it before, but bugger me if I can recall the answer."  Also there is a chance that a revealed detail might trigger a deja vu, and *pop!* I'll know the answer, but for right now, I got nuttin.

    2008-10-13 01:54:09.0

was it someone calling next door because they were having sex too loud and he wanted to disturb them to make them stop?

    2008-10-13 01:56:27.0

    2008-10-13 01:57:09.0

    2008-10-13 02:00:53.0

    2008-10-13 02:02:27.0

was it to stop the neighbor from snoring? Yes

Point goes to Duke Jake and Morgan K.

    2008-10-13 09:20:42.0

yeah it sounded familiar, but it was from this:

    The Sleepy Sailor:

By the time the sailor pulled into a little town every hotel room was
taken. "You've got to have a room somewhere," he pleaded. "Or just a
    bed, I don't care where."

"Well, I do have a double room with one occupant -- an Air Force guy,"
admitted the manager, "and he might be glad to split the cost. But to
tell you the truth, he snores so loudly that people in adjoining rooms
have complained in the past. I'm not sure it'd be worth it to you."

"No problem," the tired Navy man assured him. "I'll take it."

The next morning, the sailor came down to breakfast bright-eyed and
bushy tailed. "How'd you sleep?" asked the manager. "Never better."

The manager was impressed. "No problem with the other guy snoring?"

"Nope. I shut him up in no time," said the Navy guy.

"How'd you manage that?" asked the manager.

"He was already in bed, snoring away, when I came in the room," the
sailor explained. "I went over, gave him a kiss on the
cheek, and said, 'Goodnight beautiful,'...And he sat up all night
    watching me."

    2008-10-13 09:29:11.0
