Some of the puzzles from the calendar are too easy for a point, I'll post them here for your non-competitive enjoyment.

    2009-01-05 08:09:10.0

    January 2nd -- Fill in the banks to complete the 14-letter word:  H _ _ _ A _ _ E R _ _ N _ C

    2009-01-05 08:10:10.0

    January 3rd -- In the seven-term sequence A, B, C, D, E, F, G each term after the first three is the sum of the previous three terms.  If D = 12, E = 17 and G = 60, determine the value of A.

ZOMG brain is overloading here are you trying to kill me...

(although I'm sure it might make sense in the morning)

    2009-01-05 08:22:14.0

    Just got Jan 3rd....

    2009-01-05 08:25:05.0

    January 5th - The following 11 letters can be anagrammed into a four-word common sarcastic response to a complaint.  The enumeration is (3 2 1 5).  A C E E I M R R R V Y

    2009-01-06 10:25:16.0

What about the one that counts?

    2009-01-06 12:17:00.0

Did we miss Jan 4th somewhere?

    2009-01-07 01:04:57.0

Yep, I forgot to post it as I was wondering whether to make it count or not.

January 4th - Each answer is an overlap of three common words.  Consecutive words within each answer share at least three common letters.  E.g., Liberace prop + Rio's land + immensely wealthy person  = candelabrazillionaire.

    1. Office squawk box system + war action + Caped Crusader's car = ?

    2. Sleeping visionary + vendor + gown lace = ?

    3. Sunshade + in the black + avenue in Monopoly = ?

    2009-01-07 07:20:07.0

January 7th - Fill in the blank in Column A not with the word that belongs but with the word which commonly precedes the missing word:

    Column A:

    1. Best thing since sliced ___

    2. Bark up the wrong ___

    3. Think outside the ___

    4. Grist for the ___

    5. The whole ball of ___

    Column B:

    a. steel

    b. ballot

    c. sealing

    d. family

    e. garlic

    2009-01-07 07:22:18.0

I've got all of those except Jan4th number 2...

    2009-01-07 08:51:55.0

i'm glad it's not just me then....

    2009-01-07 08:58:41.0

Interesting, I got #2 but failed to get #3

    2009-01-07 10:49:08.0

3 is Parasolventnor (parasol + solvent + Ventnor) I had to look up the monopoly board to get the last part though ;)

    2009-01-08 05:19:48.0

I have the answers.  Did you guys get #2 yet?

    2009-01-08 06:54:28.0

oh yeah.. you're the one posting these

    I haven't gotten #2, no

    2009-01-08 06:55:27.0

    2009-01-08 06:57:55.0

I imagine it's the lace they make gowns from... no fucking clue what it would be called though

    2009-01-08 07:01:05.0

    ooh......dreamerchantilly

    2009-01-08 07:07:57.0

There you go -- I was about to say this one is not U.S. centric

    2009-01-08 07:08:46.0

Ventnor is (I think) only on the US version of monopoly...

    2009-01-08 07:11:50.0

Or maybe I just haven't played monopoly in forever.

    2009-01-08 07:12:02.0

So the foreign versions of monopoly aren't based on Atlantic City?

    2009-01-08 07:15:16.0

In the UK and in Australia monopoly is set in London.

    2009-01-08 07:23:17.0

    Interesting

    2009-01-08 07:24:25.0

drdec - you aren't just pulling our legs with "So the foreign versions of monopoly aren't based on Atlantic City?"?

    2009-01-08 20:40:59.0

No, it was a genuine question.  I haven't traveled abroad very much (at all really) so I enjoy hearing about how things are different elsewhere.  Now I assumed that there would be versions of Monopoly now which are specialized to many different locales because they have those here in the states too.  But in terms of the original, it was based on Atlantic City, NJ -- for most American children that is not really meaningful, i.e., they are not going strolling down the Boardwalk.  So it doesn't seem necessary to change it for foreign (English-speaking) countries.  OTOH, I can understand the reasoning behind changing it.

    2009-01-09 10:27:10.0

I always sort of assumed that London was "the" monopoly board... but then I'd never really had reason to think about there being different localised versions.

    2009-01-09 11:37:13.0

As the wikipedia article explains, Atlantic City, NJ is the original, the London one came later.

    2009-01-09 13:24:34.0

Yeah... I see that now :P

    2009-01-09 13:59:42.0

Okay, I admit, it was news to me too.

    2009-01-09 17:20:06.0

Oh wow... news to me too!

I thought the London one was the original too, cos that's all they sold when we were kids. (In Singapore)

All this 'customisation' to different places only came later, when I was already in high school I think.

    2009-01-09 19:14:18.0

Thanks for bringing this up drdec. I enjoy finding out things like these.

    2009-01-09 19:14:37.0

    2009-01-12 06:57:50.0

January 11th - In each row, change the first letter of the two words to a different letter (the same letter for each word) to form new words.  Write the new letter in the blank.  These letters will form a word reading down.

    2009-01-12 08:17:35.0

January 12th - My watch loses six minutes every hour.  I set my watch this morning at 7 AM using an accurate clock.  Now, the time on my watch reads 1:45 PM.  What is the correct time?

    2009-01-12 09:10:55.0

Explain that. Maybe you used the drop-down menu that appears after clicking, holding, then releasing on the toolbar (which I just noticed), rather than typing theXP manually?

No, I literally just typed : then D then pressed ctrl+enter

    2009-01-12 10:56:09.0

    Works for me

    2009-01-12 10:56:17.0

Why aren't we answering the too easy ones again?

    2009-01-12 14:28:10.0

um..so you don't look silly when you get it wrong?

    2009-01-12 14:30:53.0

The too easy one are not for points, so we don't have to prove we've done them. Since we don't post our answers, everyone can enjoy them and work them out themselves in their own time. Maybe the first person to get it can post "Got it", but if everyone did that it would be too much.

    2009-01-12 14:31:19.0

Oh, you don't have to worry about that as long as I'm here Sir M

    2009-01-12 14:31:28.0

January 13th - Five of the 50 US states are each exactly six letters long.  Fit each state's name in the proper row in the grid.  (The third letter of each state is given.)  When you're done, read down the indicated column to spell out the nickname of one of those states.

    *___~__***

    ***_~____*

    ____~_****

    ****~_____

    ____~_****

Use a fixed width font on the diagram above.  * denotes a blackened square (no letter), _ denotes a blank square and ~ a highlighted blank square (contains part of the nickname).  I omitted the given letters so it will take longer than three seconds.  Also, try to do it without referencing the web for an extra challenge.  (Well, unless you are not familiar with the US state names.)

January 14th - A banquet hall contains only chairs and round tables, and a table accommodates at most 10 chairs.  Each table has 8 legs and each chair has 4 legs.  The total number of legs on all of the chairs and tables is 960.  What is the maximum number of people that can be seated (one per chair) at a banquet in this hall?

    2009-01-14 06:55:30.0

    Oh.. no...

I set a timer to remind me when it was close to the end of the auction, but my stupid comp RESTARTED ITSELF when I left it. So no timer, so no remembrance.

On the plus point, the seller has just listed another set, so I'm aiming for that oneXP

    2009-01-14 16:43:10.0

Drdrec!?! Wheres our riddle a day gone?

    2009-01-19 11:37:55.0

    Cry

    2009-01-19 11:38:12.0

Sorry, calendar is at work and I am currently at home.  Also, I actually have work to do at work lately...

    :O

I have to have a word with your work... *tsk tsk*

    2009-01-19 16:10:34.0

January 16th - Add one letter to the four letters at each "base" to form the word for a player on a Major League Baseball team.  Then take those added letters and add one more to form yet another team player.

    First base: BERV

    Second base: ADEP

    Third base: ALRY

    Home plate: EGIR

    2009-01-20 07:30:32.0

um...what is this baseball you talk of?

    2009-01-20 08:24:21.0

Yeah that last one is only a good exercise if you already know what the baseball teams are.  Otherwise you are forced to refer to a list of them, which makes it rather easy.

    2009-01-20 10:25:59.0

January 17th - Solve the crossword:

    *123

    6. Pig's dig's

    3. Surfer's spot

    4. Used to be

    2009-01-21 05:55:45.0

Here * denotes a black square, a number denotes a blank with the number in the upper corner and _ denotes a blank square.

    2009-01-21 05:56:38.0

January 18th - Complete the sentence by filling in the blanks with four words that each differ by one letter.  The changed letter will be in the same position in each word, as in bake, bale, base, bane.

    2009-01-22 11:36:51.0

Which one, there are three outstanding currently?  (Not that it matters...)

    2009-01-22 12:36:15.0

January 20th - Put the same three-letter word in each of the blanks to forma new word on either side:

    CARA ___ WARD

    SUB ___ FARER

    HIGH ___ LAID

    2009-01-23 11:43:47.0

This next one is ridiculously easy:

January 21st - There was a contest to count the number of tires in a dealer's window.  Alex guessed 27, Bob guessed 26, Carl guessed 23, Dan guessed 20 and Ed guessed 25.  One was off by 1, two were off by 2, one was off by 5 and one was correct.  And the question is, why can't 5 grown men count about two dozen tires accurately?

    2009-01-23 11:46:24.0

January 20th - got it. done

    2009-01-23 12:11:25.0

    CARAWAY is a word?...

All the rest makes sense, so I assume this is just a vocabulary failure on my part.

    2009-01-23 13:33:53.0

FLG, we don't post the answers in this thread.  Just edit your response to say you got it.  We are on the honor system, each puzzle is worth 0 points.

    2009-01-23 13:43:33.0

January 22nd is one I would like to post as a regular riddle, but it contains picture data I'm too lazy to reproduce at the moment.

    2009-01-23 13:44:34.0

    January 23rd - Make a 4x4 word square with the following properties.  The first word is INFO.  The remaining nine letters are E N N O O X X Y Y.

    2009-01-23 13:46:37.0

    Jan 23rd - Done

    2009-01-23 13:56:22.0

Jan 21st is a joke right?

    2009-01-23 20:51:23.0

Yeah, the actual question is how many tires are in the display, but like I said, it is too easy.  It's essentially the world's most convoluted subtraction problem.

    2009-01-24 13:41:16.0

January 24th - Which of the four numbered words below could logically come next?

    CAME  MERGE  GENUINE  NEAR  _______

    1) FIGHT 2) ARMED 3) WENT 4) ASKED

    2009-01-27 13:47:08.0

January 26th - Mix the letters in each box below with another unspecified letter to create two different common nine-letter words:

    | A | N | O |

    | D | ? | D |

    | N | A | B |

    | C | L | O |

    | D | ? | E |

    | E | L | P |

    2009-01-27 13:52:03.0

The next one is for all you middle schoolers:

January 27th - Oscar wants to mix 500 grams of peanuts with some cashews to create a nut mix that is 20% cashews.  How many grams of cashews should Oscar add?

    2009-01-30 08:40:32.0

January 29th - Take the seven letter name of a famous cubist.  Add one letter.  Then rearrange the letters to form an eight-letter word that might describe an artist's studio with a high ceiling.

    2009-01-30 09:44:34.0

This one was fun, from March 17th - Use the words below to form a cyclic chain in which each word links to the next to create a common compound (or hyphenated) word or phrase.  E.g., is the words were BALL, STRIKE, LIGHTNING and DEAD, the answer could be BALL LIGHTNING, LIGHTNING STRIKE, STRIKE DEAD, DEAD BALL.  The words are:

    • GREEN
    • SERVICE
    • SUN
    • TABLE
    • OFF
    • GUEST
    • CARD
    • ROOM
    • PUTTING
    • LIGHT
    • BREAK
    • SETTING
    • HOUSE
    • STATION

    2009-03-19 08:05:46.0

So we can change the order of the words above?

    2009-03-19 13:25:39.0

Do we have to use all the words in one chain?

    2009-03-19 18:22:17.0

The idea is to change the order.  Yes, you are to use all of the words.

    2009-03-19 18:51:32.0

    March 17 - Done

    2009-03-22 14:30:04.0

March 29 - Make three across and three down words by using nine different letters, but none of the letters in ONLY.  Use all common words but no proper names, plurals, acronyms or abbreviations.  Two letters are given to get you started:

    **A

    ***

    *U*

PM me with your answer, I am curious to see if anyone gets something different from the given one (which happened to match the one I came up with).
