In the office building where Andy and Jim work there are two urinals in the men's room. One of the urinals is faulty and will flush spontaneously. Whenever Andy uses the faulty urinal it always flushes while he is still using it. However, when Jim uses the faulty urinal it sometimes flushes while he is using it and sometimes does not flush spontaneously while he is using it. Explain.
Does the urinal spontaneously flush in any predictable/repeating way, or is it entirely random?
Does Andy take longer at the urinal, to the extent that every time he's there, the urinal flushes at some point, whereas Jim, taking less time, gets caught by it less often?
Does Andy in any way cause the urinal to flush? (or is it a circumstantial thing?)
Does Jim in any way cause the urinal to not flush?

Andy flushes twice and Jim sometimes flushes twice and sometimes once....For some faulty toilets, It takes a great deal of pressure on the lever to actuate it. It appears to be time related
So andy while using it , sits on it and pressure allows for water flow
OR
urinal will not flush all the way. Sometimes you have to hold the handle down until it flushes
OR
Retrofit dual flush toilets
where double flushing is considered to be a solution as single flush does nto generate enough pressure
Andy is a cleaner, when he is "using" the urinal he is cleaning it. The event that always causes it to flush is he pours a bucket of water into the reservoir which triggers the flush - to rinse the cleaning agents that he has used...

Retrofit dual flush toilets ???
does one of them have a 'flow' problem?
Do they hit different areas while urinating?
does one of them have a 'flow' problem? No
Do they hit different areas while urinating? No
is there a sensor on the urinal that detects when there is a person standing there and when there isnt
urinal flushes with sensor detecting motion and sometimes does not work properly and jim may be a dwarf and is unable to activate sensor sometimes. duh...coldturkey just crossed with me.
Retrofit dual flush toilets - are toilets which work on saving water using dual flush mechanism- single flush will not generate enough pressure
Faulty Urinal is in bars, pubs, or nightclubs where they fill their urinal with ice cubes during peak hours. As the ice melts, it serves to slowly flush the urinal, and also cools the urine to prevent smells from rising during use.
Urinal is voice-activated flushing system......sometimes Jim is not able to say word FLUSH properly
was gonna say they are different heights ^^
Yeah for toilet humour.
It has something to do with the second urinal that is not faulty. Sometimes another person is using the second urinal when Jim is using the faulty urinal. This uses up the water causing the faulty urinal not to flush. No one wants to be in the toilets when Andy is in there.
Does andy always go on his breaks which occur at certain times, which also happen to be when the urinal flushes as the most because most people are using them.
Jim however just goes whenever, cause he dont answer to nobody!

No, both go at random times.
is there a sensor on the urinal that detects when there is a person standing there and when there isnt Yes
urinal flushes with sensor detecting motion and sometimes does not work properly and jim may be a dwarf and is unable to activate sensor sometimes. duh...coldturkey just crossed with me. No, Jim is not a dwarf.

It has something to do with the second urinal that is not faulty. Sometimes another person is using the second urinal when Jim is using the faulty urinal. This uses up the water causing the faulty urinal not to flush. The problem is spontaneous flushing, not failure to flush
No one wants to be in the toilets when Andy is in there. Perhaps, but irrelevant
Let me know if I missed a question.
urinal is one of that allows stand-ups (for men) and sit-downs (for women) with flushing sensor detection high above urinal....Andy is male. Jim is a transvestite, actually a female (originally male undergone sex-change operation) or something like that. Sensors need person to stay at least 10 seconds infront of it so that when person moves, it detects motion and initiates flush. Because Andy is standing, flush happens always. Because Jim is not standing, he sometimes kicks off flushing and sometimes does not.
is sensor speech sensor and configured by voice os Andy and word "FLUSH". Sometimes Jim's voice do not get recognised?
does fact that there are 2 other urinals matter? for some predictable pattern of using both urinals or only 1 at a time
maybe Jim is always using good urinal always and Andy faulty urinal because then both will flush, but when Jim uses faulty urinal, Andy refrains from using good one....Gosh this last sentence does not make any sense...I gotta go and pee and see how urinal behaves differently for 2 people............hahahahaha
So wait... the problem is spontaneous flushing, not flush-failure, but it has one of those sensors that are supposed to flush it after every use? How does that work, surely the aberrant behaviour would be when it doesn't flush for Jim.
Sensor usually reponds to : motion and speech, which could be different for Jim and Andy
SENSOR could have been programmed for 2 voice-activated functions ON/TOGGLE for Andy / JIM. So when Jim comes it turns its function to TOGGLE. For Andy it is ON.
One funny thinking I had was sensor responds to number of letters in name.....if even, flushes spontaneously, if odd, it sometimes does, sometimes does not
By the way I was thinking... meaning of spontaneous flushing is not clear.....should not it be instantaneous? define spontaneous flushing ? does it mean unplanned...at any time or at frequent times.
For Jim when it does not flush spontaneously, is not it the same thing as it does not flush?
I am hell lot confused now...![]()

If im not mistaken the sensors only flush when it believes the person has left, which suggests to me that.
1. Andy has a bigger bladder/pees more than Jim and therefore when the urinal has recieved enough pee it would think that a person must have finished by now and flushes.. ?
2 Andy always goes after someone else, and therefore the urinal detecting that a person has left begins to flush when another person has actually come to use the urinal ?
3. perhaps one person is heavyier/larger than the other and therefore is more inclined to trigger the flush?
The faulty urinal flushes "spontaneously" whenever the non-faulty urinal is flushed. When Jim goes to the bathroom sometimes there is another person using the non-faulty urinal, sometimes there isn't. When Andy uses the urinal there is always someone using the non-faulty urinal ... because ... Andy needs assistance going to the bathroom / he has a weird stalker.
Is this riddle based on a real-life experience of yours?
Jim is a qualified toilet mechanic, he rigs the toilet to flush on people once hes been through, only sometimes he forgets to disarm his traps?

For Jim when it does not flush spontaneously, is not it the same thing as it does not flush? No; spontaneous flushing means the urinal flushes for no apparent reason.

Is this riddle based on a real-life experience of yours? Yes; we have a urinal in our office building that has been broken for years. They have replaced every part within the urinal and moved from manual to automatic sensor flushing and it is still broken.
Jim is a qualified toilet mechanic, he rigs the toilet to flush on people once hes been through, only sometimes he forgets to disarm his traps? No
The Janitor is weird like on scrubs, he hides behind the one way mirror and loves playing pranks on people, Andy in particular he disapproves of because of that one time when he did his business on the floor, other people he does at random, depending on whether or not he is occupied with anything else at the time.
Alternatively the urinals share the same cystern, the faulty toilet therefore can empty when the working one does.

the 2 urinals are connected in flushing mechanism from same water tank, andy is handicapped and someone helping him flushes non-faulty urinal and thereby always flushes faulty one. Are the urinals identical in size/shape/setup (apart from one is faulty) or is one different
Are the urinals identical in size/shape/setup (apart from one is faulty) Yes
does the faulty urinal only flush when the good urinal flushes/is in use?
do they both know which urinal is faulty and which is not? Is the faulty urinal always the same one?
is andy or jim insecure and will only begin to use the urinal when the other is not occupied, meaning they are there by themselves unless another guy comes in after they start
will andy or jim being left-handed or right-handed matter ? meaning sensor switch is on right side and andy is right-handed and always manages to reach sensor (located in between faulty urinal and non-faulty urinal which is to the right os faulty one) while jim is left-handed and has difficulty reaching to switch and is someone else is taking a pee on his right-hand side, he better not turn to his right and take look at other person's long rod while making an attempt to flush urinal........hahahahahahahahaha
Andy is suffering from polyuria, urinary tract infection , gall bladder cindition (eg interstitialv cystitis) or prostate condition whereby he unloads 2 gallons of urine into faulty urinal which overloads it and flushes instantaneously
Jim has no such problems and faulty urinal flushes only when its capacity is reach (maybe about 1 gallon)
OR
Jim is plumber who comes to check faulty urinal and it flushes sometimes, sometimes not. Andy is a normal office guy?
OR
is faulty urinal a waterless urinal (also hooked onto water supply with flushing mechanism?) but I have no clue why it will flush for andy and not for Jim
OR maybe it is a waterless urinal where andy is plumber who is cleanign it by flushing it. Jim sometimes flushes and sometimes does not (based on how much odor he is getting)
OR combination of waterless urinal with flushing sensor mechanism based on volume of urine where andy is daily cleaning guy and jim is our normal office guy
Can anyone else sense Sir Montague and SK adjusting the sights on their sniper rifles?
I'm watching and waiting in case it becomes apparent, but I don't really have a theory as yet ![]()
If you want I could post an exhaustive list of questions regarding all urinal-related possibilities, and I'm sure SirM would obligingly join the dots in your answers and post the solution just moments before I finished typing up my second round of questioning...
And all would be well in the world...
duh....final answer before I give up.....
Jim is a k(h)orny bastard...His pee comes out in 2 different direction at same time (anybody need explanation?) and is not enough for urinal sensor to fire sometimes. Andy is normal in this sense.
ok I give up now...waiting for answer
Jim is a k(h)orny bastard...His pee comes out in 2 different direction at same time (anybody need explanation?) and is not enough for urinal sensor to fire sometimes. Andy is normal in this sense. No; what is the correlation between horniness and multi-stream urination? On second thought, maybe I do not want to know.
it is a science for that part anyways....I heard this from somewhere
were you going to answer my qs
does the faulty urinal only flush when the good urinal flushes/is in use?
do they both know which urinal is faulty and which is not? Is the faulty urinal always the same one?
Sorry, I honestly thought I already had.
does the faulty urinal only flush when the good urinal flushes/is in use? Yes
do they both know which urinal is faulty and which is not? Irrelevant
Is the faulty urinal always the same one? Yes
Tangler is not cooperating and won't let me paste the last question, but the answer is no, neither is insecure about using the urinal.
why irrelevant?
is it irrelevant because one of them doesnt believe that the urinal is faulty?
Ok, so overall, what do we know already? Care to summarise...(as it's been going on for a while)?
1 last try.......Jim is handicapped and when he is peeing, no one else can use other urinal. he sometimes can activate sensors sometimes he cannot. Andy can always get sensor to work for him and also when is andy is going at it, non-faulty urinal must be simultaneously be used by someone else who trigger flushing of faulty one.
if not then here is summary for Morgan K..........
urinal spontaneously flushes in a predictable way because it is associated with another event
there is a sensor on urinal that detects when there is a person standing there and when there isn't
problem is spontaneous flushing.
fact that there are 2 other urinals matters
the urinals identical in size/shape/setup (apart from one is faulty)
faulty urinal only flush when the good urinal flushes/is in use
auto flush sensor and andy rocks back and forth while peeing where jim does not
Does Andy have cerebral palsy.. or some other disease that makes him shake in a way that the sensor cannot see him clearly?
Do either of them have a mobile or infra-red device that affects the urinals? Where Andy's is always turned on and Jim's only sometimes?
why irrelevant? Is it irrelevant because one of them doesnt believe that the urinal is faulty? It is irrelevant because it has no bearing on the answer.

urinal spontaneously flushes in a predictable way because it is associated with another event Yes
there is a sensor on urinal that detects when there is a person standing there and when there isn't More detail than necessary, but essentially yes
problem is spontaneous flushing. This was reveled in the second sentence of the riddle
fact that there are 2 other urinals matters No, there are not 2 other urinals; there are two urinals total
the urinals identical in size/shape/setup (apart from one is faulty) Yes
faulty urinal only flush when the good urinal flushes/is in use Yes, I should clarify that I mean the spontaneous flushing here
auto flush sensor and andy rocks back and forth while peeing where jim does not No
Does Andy have cerebral palsy.. or some other disease that makes him shake in a way that the sensor cannot see him clearly? No
Do either of them have a mobile or infra-red device that affects the urinals? Where Andy's is always turned on and Jim's only sometimes? No
You guys are going to kick yourselves if I have to reveal the answer
Just to clarify - The urinal has an automatic sensor that detects when someone is standing in front of the urinal and then when they leave it is supposed to flush? But the problem is that the faulty urinal flushes spontaneously when someone is doing their business?
The urinal has an automatic sensor that detects when someone is standing in front of the urinal and then when they leave it is supposed to flush? Yes (although the exact type of sensor is irrelevant)
But the problem is that the faulty urinal flushes spontaneously when someone is doing their business? Not exactly; the faulty urinal flushes spontaneously independently of its sensor. This may happen while someone is using it; it also may happen if no-one is using it.
and as you just said, spontaneous flushing occurs only when the other urinal is in use...
so someone going in the other urinal triggers the faulty one to flush?
Is the sensor misaligned, pointed off on a skew angle that may or may not intersect with the person stood at the faulty urinal, but does intersect with a person stood at the other one
So it spontaneously flushes sometimes for Jim, if someone else trips the sensor while he's there, but it does so all the time for Andy... idunno, because he's fatter than Jim and more likely to set the sensor off with an outlying region of his waistline?
the dual thought that is causing discrepancy in my head
is that is urinal is flushing spontaneously associated with another timed event probably or another urinal, what does Jim do something extra to remove fault at certain times and how it is connected through sensor.....?
if second urinal flushes faulty urinal then is faulty urinals sensor's broken and have no role to play?
urinals may be very short in width and one person's width covering both urinals (andy is that fat and wide as Super-King stated in different context) for jim, faulty one always flushes. presence of second person at second urinal flushes the faulty one.
is method of replenishment of water from water supply/pipe into both urinals important?
Is there a physical difference between Jim and Andy?
Is it something that Jim does differently to Andy?
Does Andy/Jim know that he is doing something different to the other guy?
so someone going in the other urinal triggers the faulty one to flush? Yes
So it spontaneously flushes sometimes for Jim, if someone else trips the sensor while he's there, but it does so all the time for Andy... idunno, because he's fatter than Jim and more likely to set the sensor off with an outlying region of his waistline? No
if second urinal flushes faulty urinal then is faulty urinals sensor's broken and have no role to play? A reasonable conclusion
is method of replenishment of water from water supply/pipe into both urinals important? No
Is there a physical difference between Jim and Andy? Nothing signifcant
Is it something that Jim does differently to Andy? Yes
Does Andy/Jim know that he is doing something different to the other guy? No
So... what I'm getting so far is that
Seems odd that Andy would always, without fail, have someone else pee in the urinal next to him... unless he's stood in front of the faulty urinal and pissing across into the other one ![]()
Very close now
Ok... Andy has a pee-buddy? Someone who goes to the bathroom with him so he doesn't have to pee alone... Andy is weird.
Andy has a crippling co-dependence disorder (and hence the above)?
Andy has a conjoined twin... with a separate bladder?
Ok... Andy has a pee-buddy? Someone who goes to the bathroom with him so he doesn't have to pee alone... Andy is weird. Well, Andy may be weird but it is not because he has a pee buddy
Andy has a crippling co-dependence disorder (and hence the above)? No
Andy has a conjoined twin... with a separate bladder? No
hmm... couple of things I want to tie up to make the main attack easier
Does someone peeing in the other urinal cause the faulty one to flush...
....immediately?
....after a time delay?
....when someone pees into the faulty urinal?
Is the 'someone' going in the other urinal when Andy goes in the faulty one...
.... Jim?
.... Andy?
.... another specific person?
.... just 'someone' (different person each time)?
Does this mysterious someone always go the bathroom when Andy does?
Is there anything special to find out about Jim, or is he just a counterpoint to Andy to illustrate the fact that the urinal doesn't always flush spontaneously mid-use?
Does someone peeing in the other urinal cause the faulty one to flush...
....immediately? No
....after a time delay? In a sense
....when someone pees into the faulty urinal? No
Is the 'someone' going in the other urinal when Andy goes in the faulty one...
.... just 'someone' (different person each time)? Yes
Does this mysterious someone always go the bathroom when Andy does? No
Is there anything special to find out about Jim, Not really (clearly there is some difference but it is hardly "special")
or is he just a counterpoint to Andy to illustrate the fact that the urinal doesn't always flush spontaneously mid-use? Pretty much
this is bugging me, i still dont feel like we have enough information and we are just all taking random guesses!
Is Andy actually peeing when he goes to the urinals?
Or doing something else entirely?
Is Andy actually peeing when he goes to the urinals? Yes
Or doing something else entirely? No
I was going to re-state the important facts, but it seemed so obvious when I did that, I decided against it. (Maybe it is just obvious when you know the answer, but still.)
andy is gay and he always has a partner using other non-faulty urinal before they do their thing......I am absolutely sure this is not right answer but thought it is funny
other thing that bugged me is that drdec stated "close" "very close" to few answers given given above, but all conclusions are inconclusive eventually.
Does Jim actually pee when he is using faulty urinal?
Do Jim and Andy both use faulty urinal to pee?
Is Jim a transsexual? Are jim/Andy both 100% male? I meant no issues with their act of peeing?
does it flush spontanteously when the person on the other urinal finishes peeing, I.E. does the 'trigger' on the other urinal flush both of them
Does Andy have trouble peeing if someone else is there... such that he always waits until they leave before he's able to relieve himself... and hence also is always stood there when the flusher is set off?
does word "using" mean peeing for Andy and cleaning for Jim?
Jim is Janitor.............Jim cleans non-faulty one first and flushes non-faulty one suring his cleaning steps, both urinals being connected to same water supply this stops spontaneous flushing of faulty one when Jim is cleaning the urinals.
I think this is it
andy is gay Irrelevant
and he always has a partner using other non-faulty urinal before they do their thing......I am absolutely sure this is not right answer but thought it is funny No
Does Jim actually pee when he is using faulty urinal? Yes
Do Jim and Andy both use faulty urinal to pee? Yes

does word "using" mean peeing for Andy and cleaning for Jim? No
Jim is Janitor No
Does Andy always take longer then Jim so when Jim finishes and Andy is still going it will flush on Andy?
Is this because Andy needs to hear the sound of liquid flowing before he can go?
Does Jim always flush before he uses the urinal, meaning it flushes on Andy?
Is it something Andy does that is slightly out of the ordinary or is it something Jim does?
For the purposes of this riddle, do Jim and Andy always urinate together?
I.e. in the situation when Andy is there by himself would the faulty urinal still spontaneously flush on him?
Does the faulty urinal spontaneously flush when no one is using it?
Does Andy always take longer then Jim so when Jim finishes and Andy is still going it will flush on Andy? There are a lot of assumptions there. E.g., Jim and Andy do not coordinate their trips to the bathroom.
Is this because Andy needs to hear the sound of liquid flowing before he can go? No
Does Jim always flush before he uses the urinal, meaning it flushes on Andy? Again with the assumptions
Is it something Andy does that is slightly out of the ordinary or is it something Jim does? Not exactly
For the purposes of this riddle, do Jim and Andy always urinate together? No
I.e. in the situation when Andy is there by himself would the faulty urinal still spontaneously flush on him? No
dude that last answer and the description of your riddle totally contradict eachother
"Whenever Andy uses the faulty urinal it always flushes while he is still using it"
I.e. in the situation when Andy is there by himself would the faulty urinal still spontaneously flush on him? No
They absolutely do not contradict each other.
Someone ought to get it soon. It is actually not complicated.
how can it always flush on him while he is using it but then not flush on him when he is using it by himself
is the case of him going by himself not covered by the always clause?
hence why I asked the question:
For the purposes of this riddle, do Jim and Andy always urinate together? No
Does Jim know a trick/something that Andy doesnt?
Does the urinal flush spontaneously purely on some kind of physical circumstance?
So we have established that faulty urinal flushes when the non faulty urinal flushes, what are we trying to explain? are we trying to come up with a reason why Jim would always flush the urinal while Andy is using it?
Jim is executive VP sales manager either wearing coat and /or having suitcase on his hand which is close to second urinal. While using faulty urinal, he by mistake kicks off sensor to non-faulty urinal (this prevents faulty urinal to flush spontaneously) by waving his hand over it either to put his suit back on or to get his suitcase and belongings.
Andy is just a junior salesman wearing shirt-pant and does not wave his hand. and faulty urinal to flush spontaneously regardless.
andy is in the know when it comes to urinals...
He knows the faulty one is faulty and so always uses the good one, unless someone else is already using it. In which case he uses the faulty one.
The faulty one always flushes when the working one does, and so when the person is finished at the working one the faulty urinal flushes (Andy is still there).. Hence everytime Andy uses the faulty one it flushes, but he doesn't use the faulty one often.
Jim wants to always use the faulty one. So regularly he is using it while there is no one using the working one. Therefore it doesn't flush.
add onto my last line - But sometimes someone is using the good one alongside Jim, meaning on occasion it does flush for him.
You've got it, nice work pt_22.
good job pt22
drdec dude you are totally shit at answering questions
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
do they both know which urinal is faulty and which is not? Irrelevant
why irrelevant? Is it irrelevant because one of them doesnt believe that the urinal is faulty? It is irrelevant because it has no bearing on the answer.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
the answer to that question is very relevant... according to pt22's answer they both know, and if they didnt know then it would be random, if the reason for them choosing a particular urinal was some other preference then why didnt you answer yes to the second question....
Why would you say it always flushes on him while he is using it in the riddle description and then later say it doesnt flush on him when he is using it by himself, the description leads us to believe that there is something he is doing by himself to trigger the faulty urinal and is independant of someone elses activity
your shit is terribly confusing, contradictory and misleading.
End Rant
ahhahahahahahah sorry cold turkey. I was going to email you the answer so you could get the point... Then i thought nah.
I worked it out a couple of weeks ago on drdecs post on 4 march 3:49pm
I didn't want to snipe the answer off others cause i thought surely someone would get it soon. This week it's been pissing me off a bit to be honest that the riddle is still going....
As for your rant above... It is kind of irrelevant if they know which is faulty or not. They may just have a preferred urinal to use.
coldturkey, it is irrelevant; as pt_22 says they just have a preference as to which urinal to use.
coldturkey, you need to be more careful asking your questions. You asked "in the situation when Andy is there by himself would the faulty urinal still spontaneously flush on him?" and the answer is no because if Andy were there by himself he would not use the faulty urinal. Had you asked "when Andy uses the faulty urinal by himself would it still spontaneously flush on him?" you might have gotten the information you were looking for.
I think Super-King had this already........."When Jim goes to the bathroom sometimes there is another person using the non-faulty urinal, sometimes there isn't. When Andy uses the urinal there is always someone using the non-faulty urinal" which is same thing pt stated. (except for reasoning behind Andy' situation) I was surprised that this was not true as it seemed correct to me.
Anyways this is good riddle about situations and conditions and choices available.
You left out this part of SK's answer: "When Andy uses the urinal there is always someone using the non-faulty urinal ... because ... Andy needs assistance going to the bathroom / he has a weird stalker." This shows that SK was claiming that there was always someone in the bathroom when Andy is in the bathroom, which isn't the case. There is always someone else when Andy uses the faulty urinal, because if there weren't, he would just use the other urinal. I'd also point out that my response was "almost there" because it was very close.
ohh I see....doh...did not see that before.
anyways good riddle
Yeah... makes sense. I wasn't thinking in the right terms (the common cause between him using the faulty urinal, and it fault-flushing on him).
You totally were, and when drdec said "almost there" i thought surely you would get it..
I know what my thought process was... I was only thinking about them using the faulty one and what they might be doing differently while stood at it, not considering their use of the other urinal.
I'd have locked it down eventually, but it would have taken me a while.
Sending ...
