I can hold myself steadfast against a raging current, yet I tip and sway with every gentle wave of the sea.

I am a useful thing and a useless pastime.

I am the angels and the gods; I am courage and friendship; I am destiny and death.

    What am I?

    2009-08-16 13:28:33.0

I was thinking of seaweed after the first line

Then a fishing line after the second

Then after the third I didn't know what to think.

    2009-08-16 14:14:03.0

there's too many hints. it's confusing me

    2009-08-17 04:51:32.0

    A reflection or a shadow?

Or something abstract... like a thought or idea?

Is that your guess, or are you trying to bribe me to tell you the answer?

If that's a guess, then no.

    2009-08-23 09:34:48.0

Animal, Vegetable, Mineral, Manufactured object or Abstract concept?

    2009-08-23 14:12:21.0

Manufactured object, for the most part.

    2009-08-23 17:07:34.0

So... a manufactured part and another part?

What about the other part then... A/V/M/MO/AC? :P

    2009-08-23 19:29:55.0

    Concept, I guess.

    2009-08-23 22:02:43.0

    Electricity?

    2009-08-24 00:24:20.0

Is it a thing that's sometimes manufactured and sometimes abstract, or a thing that has 2 parts, one of which is manufactured the other of which is abstract, or a thing that is simultaneously manufactured and abstract?

Are you in fact referring to multiple things in different parts of the riddle? If so, how many things are referred to? (don't make me start going through the numbers, 'cause I'll do it :P). If there are multiple things, are they related by a similarity in name or a similarity in the things?

One guess: Is it the internet?

If it is in fact just one thing, then is it a thing I could touch? Could anyone touch it?

    2009-08-24 17:57:04.0

The pastime is an abstract concept.  The rest is tangible.

Since there could be many examples of the answer, the number of tangible objects is subject to interpretation.

The similarity is in name, but in some part also in the things.

    It isn't the internet.

is the pastime something people do for fun? Yes.

naval gazing? No. train spotting? No. bird watching? No.

    is it a book? No.

the only abstract useless pastime i can think of is day dreaming

These were my choices: Animal, Vegetable, Mineral, Manufactured object or Abstract concept.  I think calling it an abstract concept is misleading, but the other descriptions were clearly wrong.

    2009-09-06 08:04:43.0

Oh.. ok.. sorry, I guess I didn't read it properly :)
