I got bored and made no attempt to make a good riddle. anyway.

One day in hemrock land habu the homophobic hobo was thinking of how terrible his horrible life was. habu hated smoking harbunna leaves and really wanted to smoke cigerrettes like harold, harry and herpies, (hard hat workers from the construction yard half a hectare from habu's house of hay). One day Habu waited for harold, harry and herpies to finish their half and hour smoko to smoke on the remaining cigerette butts. habu the hairy hermit discovered with his magical powers he could construct one full cigerette from two individual cigerette butts. On todays occasion harold and harry had managed to smoke three cigerettes each while herpies (struggling with his itchy balls) only managed to smoke one cigerette. On todays occasion how many FULL cigerettes could habu smoke using the butts from the construction workers.

If harold, harry and herpies were to EACH smoke one more cigerette then the number they had individually smoked the previous day how many days would it take for Habu to smoke 71 packs of cigerettes?

Harold, Harry and Herpies only have one smoko a day so only one smoking session per day. No butts were found before the first day and consider there to be 20 cigerettes in each pack

Harold and harry died not long after the final day, while smoking cigerettes curered herpie's herpies.

First one - he could make 6. From the first 7, he could roll 3 plus have an extra half left over. After he smoked those, he could roll the butts of those three along with extra half to make 2 newer ones. After he smoked those 2 he could roll 1 last one with those butts. 3 +2+1= 6.

so if they each smoked one more every day, then the two would smoke 4 each and herp would smoke 2. so 10 cigs a day.

with the ten he could roll five, with the five he could roll 2 1/2, with the 2 1/2 he could roll 1. so 8 1/2 cigarettes a day.

assuming he can keep the leftover half, and 71 packs x 20 cigs/pack = 1420 cigarettes / 8 1/2 cigs a day =  167....

so it would take him 168 days. because only the last day he would have the 1420 mark.

y = 1420

1420 - 7 = 3x

1413 = 3x

x =   471

If we assume that Habu smoked all the butts he found the same day he found them, the number of days to complete 71 packs would be the same number of days it took the hard hat workers to create them, 142 days.

If Habu kept the butts from day to day, he could create 1420 cigarettes, using the butt from the first day as a 'holder'.  Assuming Habu's smoking habits have not changed along with the construction workers', he would finish the cigarettes on 1420/6 days, rounded to the 237th day, when he would smoke the last four.

On further reflection, if he used up all the butts each day, Habu could get 9 cigarettes each day, and complete 1420 cigarettes in 1420/9 days, finishing the last 7 cigarettes on the 158th day.

each day, each of the three smoke a total number of cigerettes each which totals one more then the number they each smoked the previous day. i.e the total number of cigerettes smoked each day increases by 3 each day...

My math...  
71 packs, 20 per pack,  2 butts needed to make one cigg  =  2840 ciggarettes required to be smoked.   I think this is where Trlovens and EekGeek went wrong, as they were focused on 1420, but Habu needs 2 butts to make one ciggarette.

I then used a successive approximation type formula....

Total smoked =   7 x day + 3 x (day - 1) + 3 x (day -  2) + 3 x (day - 3) ..... and so on.

Which told me on the 41st day they will have smoked a total of 2747 cigarettes.
Therefore to this point Habu could have only made and smoked a maximum of 1373 cigarettes.
On the 42nd day after smoko, he can make 1438 cigarettes. (so at some point inbetween surpassed the 71 pack margin).

This of course is assuming that Habu smokes as many cigarettes as he can make on any given day...

Ok, realised my mistake, Habu keeps the cigarette from one day and reuses that butt on the following day.

Therefore my count of total ciggarettes is off by the number of days that it is.

The answer is at the end of the 29th day he will have smoked 1420 cigarettes, or 71 packs.

Boom! he gets it.

and to think i realized my mistake last night

i could've changed it... :( oh well i have exams to study for anyway
