I need help - we have a guest from overseas staying with us

    2007-07-16 09:01:11.0

and he's driving me up the wall

    2007-07-16 09:02:34.0

I'm trying to decide whether it's a clash of cultures or plain basic etiquette.............

one of the reasons it bothers me it's cause i make surei don't do such things when I'm staying over someone else's house when on holiday

    2007-07-16 09:03:57.0

Over the past two nites I've had to stay up 2 hours past my intended bed time (just that I need to be up real early next morning) so i can open the door for him - past midnite.

The bozo does not even call to indicate how delayed he'll be - that has bothered me more than actually having to stay up. He apologies last nite - I politely told him that we'd appreciate if he could call and inform us. He does the exact same thing today!!!

    2007-07-16 09:04:41.0

today was even worse - he comes back and still expects dinner!!! Of course his share was cooked - but it meant i had to take it out and heat it - which in itself is no big deal but i'm thinking if you were out past midnite - why didnt' you just eat whereever you were - the zoo in this case. NOw i'm here furiously typing away while i wait for him to eat so i can wash up the dishes after!!

    2007-07-16 09:06:07.0

he's actually a grown man - a doctor who's here on a medical conference. For some reason has chosen to stay with us instead of a hotel.

He's not made an attempt to find out the timetable of the house nor stick with it when told what's going on. As the example below cites from 2 days ago.

I've actually told him, dinner is about to be served - he says ok he'll join us. So I serve dinner - invite him to join us at the table. He then proceeds at this point to go up for a shower and does whatever in his room and comes down for dinner AN HOUR LATER!!! My mum who offers to wait for him - then is left hanging cause she's not sure when he's coming down cause he said he'll be joining us!!!

    2007-07-16 09:12:05.0

The reason this is bothering me so much is cause personally whenever I'm a Houseguest, I make sure i find out the timetable of the household for mealtimes - so i'm not imposing on them at any point. If they are going to be cooking for me - i'll make sure to inform them in advance whether or not i'll be eating and I always ensure that I don't make mu host wait up for me without informing them of what I'm doing.

If i'm delayed for unexpected reasons then at least they know what's going on. This especially when they are working or have school in the morning.

    2007-07-16 09:15:33.0

he's my mum's guest - so I'm keeping quiet and counting down the days. Any of my frens would probably have a good talking to by now.

I get that he's excited about exploring and travelling the country - and probably enjoying the freedom of doing it alone. But shouldn't he be sparing a thought for his hosts outside of just the bed and meals that we provide?

With his attitude - staying at a hotel would be more appropriate!!

    2007-07-16 09:21:12.0

    I totally agree with you

    2007-07-16 09:23:49.0

     Thank you Doume!!!:)

Crap!! the moron's calling - needs more food I think. If he's going to helplessly ask for ice water - I'm going to open the Fridge in slow mo -pull out the bottle of iced water and pour it all over him!!!

The mornings are another round of fiasco!!! Yeesh!!

    2007-07-16 09:27:35.0

    I'll send you good vibes:P

    2007-07-16 09:28:30.0

What an idiot..... I think you should stop serving him.

Anyways, who's this genius? No wonder you guys didn't call over the weekend..... I thought something must have been happening over there

    2007-07-16 19:15:36.0

First thing... can you give him a key? Then you don't have to wait around.

Ask him in the mornings if he will be needing dinner. If he says "yes" then leave it out ready to be put in the microwave. You should not have to wait on him - especially not as he seems to be treating your house like a hotel!

    2007-07-25 22:40:45.0

Exactly.... even Hotels have kitchen closed times

    2007-07-25 23:03:11.0

    He's left - thank god!!!

Each day he refused to take the key - that was the whole problem - why i got so mad at him.

He'd refuse to take the key cause he claimed multiple reasons (wouldn't know how to open the door, he'd be coming home early, etc.

    2007-07-26 08:30:14.0

he was extremely inconsistent about things - when he was leaving, coming back, eating or not. He'd do one thing then do anothe.

but he'd not do the right thing to then take into account that his plan was not set in stone - like take the key, or be independent in getting his meals/drink.

    2007-07-26 08:33:53.0

    What an idiot....

    good riddance

    2007-07-26 16:21:03.0

Wish I had read this thread sooner Aman. As Rai can attest from a story I told her this morning, have some novel ways to keep recalcitrant people in line.

    2007-07-30 04:27:08.0

hmmmm.... which story would that be Alex?

    2007-07-30 04:37:36.0

The people or rather the object that messed with the entrance to something. Rai, you're not to type anything that might be taken down in evidence against anybody.

    2007-07-30 04:40:19.0

I feel sorry for you Aman that sounded like the guest from hell!

    2007-07-30 04:43:18.0

Thanks Clovar. And Alex, in future I'll definately turn to you for advice - esp. when I'm about to lose my cool!!!:)

    2007-07-30 19:07:40.0

omg i wish i had read this earlier! u know this just fortifies my theory about doctors are such clutter-brains! was he a relative? even if he was a relative, i think he ought to have more cow sense than this. as it is, he's been given a roof over his head AND food, the least he could do is to show some form of courtesy. the family home should never be treated as a hotel. tsk! i wanna smack his head for you....although this happened more than a year ago.:P
