To tell the truth I see a cross of social media and OS coming.

What I mean is social media networks and applications such as Ma.gnolia a
social bookmarking service coming off the web and onto the desktop
where you no longer having to go to each website to manage your account
but rather manage it from the Operating System offline.

I also see the Operating System becoming web centric where all OS software is ran from manufacturers web server vice from the hard drive.

Yeah, I can see the day where u get a box with no software apart from bootstrap, you plug it in and it downloads all os and application software on the fly, so the first time u use it it takes a while 2 set up but after that it updates automatically, pushes content to you, has online and offline storage, and it will all run using flash storage and no HDD.  Its only a matter of time

Internet connectivity would have to be pretty much completely ubiquitous (as well as more reliable at the server end than it is now) or people would'nt switch on the basis of "what if it breaks and I can't access anything"

I would also take issue against entrusting all my files to another entity

@Super-King - I agree with your statement - sharing of information should stay with the user on the hard drive or secured web service.

Although with increase of Broadband "always on" and technologies like Chris's Touchstone information traffic processor, Google Desktop app, Joost, Veoh, and all the Widgets out there the web services are beginning to move to the desktop.

Server issues will always be a concern with the increase flow and size of information. Just look at the increase of video content on web.

It's interesting you say that. The World is Flat by Friedman remarks on open source placing applications and work flows online, like OpenOffice,  for certain benefits, like being able to access your work from any station.  First it's fully online open source applications that we use. The next logical step is a fully open OS

Here is where Social Media is most likely to end up at.

oooh... it's amazing the possibilities isn't it... we're doing so much with limited interfaces now. Can't wait to explore with this kind of thing.

    2007-06-02 02:10:43.0

    The question now is:

Where and what to place the interface on so its easy to handle, interact with, and usable?

I personally think the handheld (iPhone) will start the revolution into this space.
