Well you will love Covet, I sure did!  The nightwalkers have vamps witches wolves you name it.  I think there are 6 books and each one focuses on a special person from each group of people.  It was one of my first paranormal series.  I havent heard of any of those series I will ahve ot look into them!

I read the beginning of Covet & already loved it. I was laughing - not in a silly way - the dry humor was there & I loved the concept already.  I am kind of wondering if each book will be based on one of the 7 mortals they have to try & flip for balance - kind of like the 7 deadly sins but I am not far into it - I just started reading a bit of it while waiting for my Kindle order to start working on the 4th Cassandra Palmer series book. I was having issues.

With the Bishop series its psycic crime fighting with a branch of the FBI.  Romance is here its just NOT the main part of the book.  If you havent checked Kay Hooper out you may find her different but good.  Also Tami Hoag's romance books are good.  Dark Paradise is my all time fav book.  A city girl in the country and a nice ole cowboy to scratch her itch.

I am not usually a hardcore romance although I like it in my books. Rather I like great sexual tension but not silly cheese. Examples of silly cheese I couldn't get down with - Anya Bast - The Chosen Sin, a bit of Nalini Singh's The Guild Hunter (the prequel E book was really promising but the 1st main book was a bit ...typical), The 1st Mortals After Dark, The Riley Jensen series (puke), the 1st few books in the BDB series although they came to be a favorite series by the end of book 4.

Mysteries are hard for me b'c I tend to figure it out or am disappointed by endings which are not that surprising. I just think it's b'c I have seen so many movies & read so much.  Presumed Innocent was a great one though but I did figure it out in the very beginning although I remember I still thought it was really good..clever.

I am Big into great dialog & chemistry...banter. That really floats my boat. I hate stupid character denial issues or mis-communication's or generic/tedious plot "twists" just to drag out development or tension (example - Werecats, Mercy Thompson) b'c the author can't come up with a more original way to show growth. It's lame - that's what I call "Three's Company Syndrome".

I also love creativeness. If I can picture it in my head like a movie - if it blows me away visually (in my head).

Even thought it's not technically mystery Signs of the Zodiac surprised me a lot for the 1st 2 books (the short story in book 2.5). I caught on more once I got familiar with the author's style, esp. by the 4th book but she is seriously clever.

Sookie surprised me a lot in regard to the big reveal in book 6 so I think that's why I love the series so much. You kind of thought it was over by book 3 & then she drops a bigger bomb 6 books in.

Her Harper series though, I thought was seriously lacking punch or surprise esp. for being a mystery writer.

Which books have really surprised you?

Which books have really surprised you?

I don't know if this question was asked in general or about a specific series, but I'll jump on a general call to I-didn't-see-that-coming.

There is a new twist on a pretty familiar theme in Nightlife, the first Leandros Brothers book by Rob Thurman that I really didn't see coming at all. As I've read on in the series, it seems that Rob Thurman is a conniseur of the big twist -- but it's never entirely what you thought it would be. I respect that and admire how Thurman constructs the twist so it actually flows with the story for a tricksy ah-ha!

City of Souls, the fourth book in the Signs of the Zodiac series had a twist I didn't expect at all and hit me like a brick to the head. I was truly upset for a couple of days afterwards which is why the release of the short story a couple of weeks later was like a soothing balm for my sanity. As you mentioned, that series is really well layered and there are many developments I didn't see coming because the story is told in the first person narrative, but none of the twists are completely out of left field either (at least not if you looked for the clues), what makes it compelling is that the author is really quite talented at building interpersonal dynamics and inner dialogues that resonate with a reader's emotions.

Another book four in a series that sucker punched me was Destined For An Early Grave, from the Night Huntress series. I stayed up all night to finish that little doozy because I couldn't stand not knowing how it ended.

There have been some shifts in behavior from characters in series that took me by surprise (but which I accepted because the shift was plausable). In the Anita Blake series, Otto/Olaf's smooth moves on Anita in Skin Trade had me laughing out loud, loved it and didn't see it coming but totally believed it. Likewise, I didn't see some of the shifts coming in the Nighthuntress series that developed (don't want to say exactly what because they're big time spoilers). In the Sookieverse, I was shocked by the lack of inner diaoluge or emotion from Sookie in DAG -- either she's got PTSD or she's lost any depth of character she once possesed.

What books or characters have taken you all by suprise?

  • Random Thoughts#6: Express Yourselves (OFF TOPIC SUFF) NEW THREAD!

Has anyone watched that new series The Voice?? So f-ing good! I thought Christina was a little OTT with her version of 'Crazy'. All of her runs...not really my thing. Sometimes, but you have to be Mary J. Blidge to get away with that. Adam Levine was awesome singing it though. He sounded almost exactly like Cee-Lo.

  • CH Q & A's, Interviews, etc... THREAD 3

I think she has 3 sect's of readers that want a particular happy ending.

1 - to end up back w/her 1st love, Bill & for their relationship  to come full circle somehow. All is forgiven, kind of idealized romantic ending.

2 - for to end up with what makes the most sense - following the love story arc that has been building throughout & end up with Eric. All signifying Sookie growing, beliefs & perspectives have evolved to get from the gal we met in DUD to the finished product.

These 2 opinions are the majority of readers.

In the minority is the 3rd ....& I am thinking this might be the "some"  of her readers she's referring to.

3 - for her to get a more traditional, status quo happy ending & be with someone she can have children with & purportedly all of a sudden be able to have a safe life..hence being with Sam, Alcide or anyone else she can make babies with.

There is another alternative I've wondered about throughout the years & that is Sookie not really making a hard & fast decision at the end & taking more of a stand for herself. Leaving it all kind of ambiguous but happy enough with where she is in her life, hinting at what's ahead.

Although recently - Charlaine just said in an interview that her books were "romance mystery". So she is finally admitting they are romance driven so I doubt, the 4th scenario is going to end up the option.

In any event, with the 3 various & opposing fan bases - she very well knows she's not going to please everyone. It's just which fan base is she referring to? I'm thinking the more idealized baby/ picket fence hopeful's.

  • True Blood Season 5 Spoilers

Eric (double feeding at the end, begging Sookie to be with him in front of Bill - WTF?).

HUH??? I stopped watching mid-season. Sounds like a good thing I did. That sounds ridiculous.

  • True Blood Season Four Info

I totally thought that too Liann! I think it is one of the common myths associated but they'd have to have done research. Probably one of his writers did (or did he write that ep)?

  • "Small Town Wedding" **SPOILERS**

I don't have the energy to read it b'c I'm just getting so bored of the reader manipulation but it sure does sound like you got the right Vibe. Sounds like Judy could be right.

  • Show Us Your Face (A place to post a picture of yourself)

    Wow. Pretty ladies!

I hate pictures of myself. My husband gets annoyed b'c I usually delete ones taken of me on our digital camera.  I must be one of the few not on Facebook. But I will post one when I get a chance.

  • Sam: Boss, Collie, occasional Lion & Friend?

    From Rachel:

Maybe we should start a thread on Sam -- especially because we have been given to understand he will be given a bigger role in Book 9.

Something that never sat well with me about Sam was that he seemed to go out of his way to pick romantic liaisons that were particularly odious to Sookie -- first there is Callisto who attacked Sookie. Later, he gets involved with Tanya while she is spying on Sookie.

An argument could be made that he's taking one for the team by getting involved with women who have hurt Sookie or who aim to so that he could keep an eye on them? I am not so sure.

Think of how Calvin handles the Tanya spying situation -- he calls her out on it and forces her to "take her medicine". Sam never does anything like that.

I believe Sam is a friend to Sookie -- but I am not sure his role is simply relegated to faithful companion or unrequited love. I'm really interested in what your observations and thoughts are on Sam

Also, if Sam is such a good friend to Sookie why does Sam keep Arlene on staff?

She's unreliable, she's mean spirited and she's always side-tracked at work by her kids, her men and her cults. Surely there are other qualified applicants for her job in Bon Temps -- why does he keep Arlene on staff?
