The idea of the game is for someone to start at (an allowed) station and the next participant to "move" to the next allowed London Underground station. The winner will be the one who arrives (without breaking any of the rules) at Mornington Crescant, The rules are quite simple but there are some devilish deviations and twists to watch out for...
For those of you who don't know the London Underground, you can download a map here http://www.tfl.gov.uk/assets/downloads/colourmap.pdf
I'll Start:
Upminster.
*looks at the map*
OH MY GOODNESS!
Upminster Bridge
No, not allowed. Upminster Bridge is only an allowed destination if you have veered through the Kensington Loop. It's not a step-by step game and going from station to station on the same line is rarely allowed.
The game can only continue when you put in a destination...
Hornchurch!
That's better. A good move for a beginner as well...
Surrey Quays
What the?! How'd you get all the way there?!
Ok.... Canada Waters
(Where's JR?! I need you!!)
Hah! Caught you out there.
Maida Vale.
*#(@$&
Harrow & Wealdstone
Sloane Square.
Holborn
I am not sure that move is allowed. Not under the rules we are using
Why not?
You'll have to ask Arthur, but while we are waiting...
Blackfriars
Took me long enough to find that one. The next obvious move would be ...
Parsons Green
Clever .......very clever
Park Royal
Ickenham
Holborn is OK. The recent amendments through the Holroyd/Ginnons conference do allow deviations by the Arba process so Holborn was OK. In fact Dek should have had another go for Ickenham
That's ok... you can go![]()
So is it Arthur's turn now then?
Sure!
Your turn again... for Ickenham
West harrow
Ha! Gotcha...
Bounds Green - get out of that one if you can!
Ruislip! Ha!
Hmmmph!
Southwark.
Tricky............
I never like to make it too easy.
Hmmm .....you have got us stuck in the Waterloo triagle
I know a way out...
....can't go to Blackfriars again........?
Green Park!
Hey! how did you know that! you are "supposed" to be a beginner at this.
Lancaster Gate
Rickmansworth
Ruski... You have fallen into the oldest trap in the game. I can now make 3 legal moves.
One of them is - Mornington Crescent!
New game:
Wembly Central.
Pimlico
Brixton
South Woodford
Cockfosters
Damn!
Leicester Square!
Aldgate East - take that!
Bank!
I hope this isn't going to get dirty.
Pudding Mill Lane
Walthamstow
Central
Elephant and Castle
Old street
Got out of the Waterloo triangle again, but via the old route
C'mon JR stick to the rules. Old Street is off the variable round vector for this condition.
Tottenham Hale
Arthur you said new game. All named "new games" start with the Shackelton rule
Aldgate
Bishops Bridge
Ok conceeded.
Southgate
Two moves to me then:
Hyde Park Corner
and........
Marble Arch
Mornington Cresent!
I winz
Damm, I hoped no one would see that.
=========
Shephedrs Bush
Kings Lynn
No no no noooo, we're off the map here.
I'm just checking the rules here...... Ruskie. your error means you have to miss two turns.
Two?
Didn't it used to be three?
The old off the map trick is just not what it used to be.
hahahaha
Ealing
It still is three. However the chat room version just says two.
Nasty...
Tottenham Court Road
Does my previous "off the map" that I got away with cancel the penalty?
I withdraw that. Proceed.
Well Reasoned Ruskie. If we let the small rule breaches through the game will fall into chaos and guesswork...
Baker Street. Ah Ha! now you have three choices but none of them Mornington Crescent
Those missed turns are going to cost me.
Chigwell
Oooooh!
Only TWo missed turns Ruskie - we are using the chat room rules not the same room rules
I thought that would spin you JR...
Gants Hill
Thing is Shoreditch is closed. Does that count. Is this map up to date?
Ahhhhhhh
Bow Road
Wembley Central
North Wembley
You can't have that one Dek. You must veer through the Kensigton Loop first (adjacent station rule)
and as it's the second time you forfiet the turn
South Acton
Heathrow Terminal 4
Rayner's Lane
Between this group and Tangle Games, I'm wide awake with all the laughing!
I hope you are taking this game seriously Miss Dek!
Old Street
Euston
And that's Ms Dek to you tankyouberrymuchly!
Mornington Crescent
Didn't see that did you?
Well done JR I see you are up to date with the Shackleton rules!
Devious, very devious...
I did see it, but I thought someone would jump in and remind me that I was out for two turns!![]()
One tries.
======
Oxford Circus
Aldwych
@ Ms Dek. You weren't, you just forfeited the go you just had thats all...
Seven Sisters
hrrrmph!
Blackhorse road
Well you've made up for the oversight.
Hackney Wick
West hampstead
Alperton
Ickenham
Morden. Arthur now in trouble.
Lambeth North
Oh!
Thanks JR
Rotherhithe
Oh What?
You're welcome
heheheheeeee
New Cross!
London Bridge
Nice JR. All the end-of-line moves were opening the game up.
Barons Court
Acton Town
Gloucester Road
Mornington Cresent!
You should play with this:

Eh?...with what? No image.
I thought this game had died......
Tottenham Court Road
Bummer... I'll find it again

Cannon Hill
Montevideo (apparently)

The problem with these itinerant maps and things is that the rules of Mornington Crescent are based on the characteristics of the actual places and if that is deviated from most of the moves make no sense whatsoever...
mmm hmmm
Of course, AD is correct: there is an intrinsic and beauteous value in the developed (but based on the original) rules being adhered to at all times -otherwise the spirit and small sense of honour is, or can be, lost. For that, I apologise for my own deviation therefrom. Unlike, say House Rules for Monopoly, there really isn't a way to get away from the rules to Mornington Crescent and perhaps I should have remembered this...and maybe Dek should look the rules up.
Again AD is correct, if we don't stick to it, then the game makes no sense. But perhaps we have been a little lax, and unfortunate in giving a wrong impression to new-comers to MornCres, here in the TGames Group and allowing some outrageous moves, giving the impression that this might be some "Backyard Cricket" form of the game, where maybe you can just do what you like where this just isn't the case in a proper reality.
Thanks for that JR. However.... and I say this without any authority whatsoever but... the world must move on. Eventually peoples of different cultures, races and so on develop higher intellects for such games. Would be (absurdly) wrong to assume that they would have to be forced to utilise a different ethos, culture and level of intellect to be able to enjoy a game such as Mornington Crescent? Having said that it will take several generations to transpose each nuance and codicil into a game called (for instance) "Whatley Crescent"
New Game...
Fairlop
(for those not familiar with the rules; Bermondsey, Tottenham Court Road and Sloan Square are not allowed for the next move)
Kingsbury
Randwick
Elephant and Castle
Petersham
Hainault
Kensai Rise
I suppose you mean Kensal Rise, in that case my crafty swerve around the Hainault loop gives me a quicker than usual win. A recently ratified re-interpretation of the Shackleton rules paragraph 123.9.77 means that the Hainault Loop Swerve when executed before a slight error by the next player who has previously landed at Kingsbury allows me to go to anywhere I like, including Mornington Crescent so....
Mornington Crescent.
Anyone else care to start another...?
LOL. Yeah silly old me.
Leichardt
You are being silly now Dek. If you can't take the game seriously I suggest you don't play!
Are you admitting defeat?
No-one has ever lost at this game. Some have reached the correct conclusion before others but when they do it is obvious to those who haven't knew what it was but just didn't know whether they should say it or not. Hmmm. Maybe that's the skill of the game, or is it knowing the rules. Who knows?
Menlo Park!
I still have absolutely no idea how this game is played...
You are not alone. Even the experts have difficulty reaching your standard of expertise...
Ok, time for another game. I'll start
Tooting Bec
No takers? and there was me thinking I'd start a new game and deliberately make it easy for the next player...
