We're looking into tools that will help integrate tangler with existing userbases. The basic concept at this stage is to provide a mechanism to:

    1. Detect if a user has a tangler account

    2. Preauth that user using stored authentication details on your site

    3. Let you create a tangler account and bind it to your user.

    What do you think?

seamless:)  i had an odd idea about using amazon s3 static files for doing auth checks... might elaborate later on that.  but yes, i am psyched that you guys are movin forward on this plan to let tangler be deeply integrated.  its obivous to me... giving almost total branding control to users.... but so many services go about it the old way.  do you think you will eventually see a need to provide a sort of tangler appliance for heavy sites?

    hi guys,

I'm glad you're talking about this.

I can't speak for the rest, but what I need is to make this happen the other way around.

I have an existing site with a membership base. So I need to be able to open up an API that allows you to authenticate with me - essentially "we have a post from user 'danmcb' with encrypted password xxx - is this OK?

But actually, we are doing some wheel reinvention here. What about openID? Typekey?

Not sure TypeKey is the right fit for us. OpenID is definitely something we're looking at.

Do either really solve the problem though. If Tangler were to support URL/token binding or some other proxy authentication system wouldn't that be the most seamless system. I don't want something in between, you're users just seamlessly step through into Tangler discussion - once you're auth'd it's remembered.

I know this is work in progress and I have seen (and tried) the embed of topics, but are there any recent developments? This is still very high on our wish list as we need to integrate discussions more tightly. It is hard to get users.. making them sign up twice does not help.

No progress just yet, but certainly lots of internal conversations on how best to do this.

For what it's worth, the integration I am hoping to do currently does all authentication via HTTPS client certificates. This could certainly be done with OpenID, since our OpenID provider auth page could still use certificates.

    And oAuth?

I would really like OpenID support due to the simple fact that I'm using myOpenID.com with certificates - very fast and easy. I don't know enough about oAuth and other one-account-5-billion-sites services to say anything about that.

We're creating a multi-portal sitebuilder application and as far as I can see, your original suggestion would work great for us - with the addition that our forum/s would be private to our users, all of which would automatically be invited. How are you getting on with this? I really like what you're up to but some kind of single sign on is essential before we could integrate it with what we're up to. Thanks.

    Hi PeterH.

We haven't gotten around to it as we have been busy with our new offering TanglerLive, but we do have a white label forums product which might suit your needs. Could you please drop me a line via e-mail and we can take it from there? rai@tangler.com

    Thanks!
