Tell us what you would like to do with Tangler? If your a part-time hacker and have some API requests that you would like us to expose for you, let us know.
For example;
Could there be some sort of way to call all of the content of a chat room? I could see this being used for a content management type system for posting. Then you'd be able to control the look of the content.
I know there are plenty of CMS's but I could see a small company using tangler to discuss things with each other and then wanting to publish those discussions, or maybe being able to have a topic which held posts, which were then displayed on an external page with whatever styling they wished.
Thanks bjtitus, that's certainly on the table and would work rather well.
access to same data as daily digest would be a good early set of content to work with.... and user presence, new group creations by friends, access to "links" from posts.... and embedded media (ie. grab all images embedded in topic/group or by user. i know grabbing the embedded media is tougher, but its feasible once you know how the recipe.
guys, I have a ite I am working on that needs some quite special forum functionality.
It is a multilanguage vocabulary learning thing - http://www.engoi.com (the one that is there is quite old, there will be an all new version in a few weeks ... )
The site has a lot of content which is translated into many languages, and people can then learn the content.
Here's what I want to do:
- put a button next to each translation where people can flag it as inaccurate, or they want to discuss the translation.
- then on the site a button will appear linking to that discussion, which is labelled "open"
- over a period of time, some consensus is reached over what the translation *should* be
- the person responsible (I haven't figured out who this would be yet, but anyway the decision needs to be made from me end) then marks the convo "resolved" and update at my site
Basically it's a model for using forums really as a community tool for arriving at consensus. I haven't factored it into an API yet - I'm several months (at least) from implementing this. But I know it's something I want - and I'll either build it or borrow it ...![]()
Live Video.
It would be awesome if we could have a live video feed inside a Topic; this would be awesome for hosting live events with user participation. It would also be great to have video chat capability.
I know that the great part about Tangler is that it is live and it's recorded for posterity, so I guess the best way that live video would work with Tangle is if it would could record the video feed as it is fed. That way, people who logged in later could rewind and play. This would take some serious work, but it would be an incredible ap.
I know that hundreds of companies would pay for that feature...scratch that, they are paying for that feature somewhere else. On some elses crappy website!![]()
danmcb, what you described sounds like a wiki to me. Am I wrong?
You can already do that with UStream (sorry for posting such a large video). BTW, this just happened to be the video on the front page, I didn't choose it.
What would be cool would be including a live stream somewhere on the page, but a popup would probably be just as good.
Hmm...I'll have to check that out. I am behind a crazy firewall right now, so it won't let me see the video you put up there. Is the popup streaming a live feed?
OK, one more... Can we allow someone else to manage a group? Is that possible? If it is not currently possible then that would be a great app. Our old forum (ACCESS218's) became a behemoth and we needed several people to manage it because of spammers and such. Tanglers interface is certainly much easier to manage, but it would still be nice to allow multiple users to admin a group, or a topic.
Hey Ray, we don't have that feature at the moment. Though it's certainly on the roadmap.
Agree that it's something really needed for larger traffic forums (which is where we are going).
I guess personally, I'd be wondering primarily about authentication. The rest I am sure will come with time, but the sticking point on almost every integration I've worked on recently has been authentication. Without openid support and registration/profile extensions I'd be keen to know how we this might work.
By the way, the development path you guys are taking is awesome. I love the new css stuff, and when put together with an API, this is very very useful stuff. I'm really impressed.
