My system is thrashing with a message.. transferring data from http://www.tapefailure.com

But why would this make it impossible to edit a post?  (at least that's how it appears, as I noticed the inability to edit only as it started showing the activity in my browser..

Not sure on performance... I had a short spell when Recent Activity remained in "loading" state for extended period of time... but it appears ok now...

You turned it off?

As soon as my browser stopped showing the activity I can go in and edit and delete messages... 

Hmmm, looks like the tapefailure script was causing issues...not sure why though. I've disabled it for now so you should be able to edit messages again.

Oh yeah, the problem you got with 'Recent Activity' is a bug, you'll get the 'loading...' message on the 'Home' and 'Search' page, but it should work finr on the other pages. We've got a fix for it, just need to schedule another deployment.

It doesn't look like it really had a debilitating impact other than those mentioned... I wasn't able to replicate problem with too long updating recent activity so it might not have been related.... really hard to try things out when you've got an international community on your hands....

In any case, I've had a look at the data returned by tapefailure and though some information was useful, i don't think it's exactly what i was after. I may try Crazyegg and see the results for that.

Just wanted to add that we tried using a similar user tracking system on ourwebsite sometime ago and almost all our users complained. They seem to have negative impact on sites with a lot of activity with lots of user interactions. I would say more so with tangler due to its heavy ajax nature.

What did you end up doing? Did you find another alternative?

No, we just disabled it and decided that the performance hit wasnt worth the trouble. Its been a while now, it was in beta at the time and was offered free, so we werent out anything. But users were complaining of over 20s loading times and sometimes not even loading fully. We were only running vbulletin and php scripts on the site. Normally load is <5s.

There has to be some way though to use it without it having adverse effects, otherwise those types of apps/scripts wouldnt be viable.
