In what we hope is a wonderful moment in the history of Tangler, we lift the veil of something we're really excited about.

It's only an alpha, so don't tell the world about it just yet, but it's working well so far. And we'd like your help to test it.

This topic in Tangler Feedback is the first to be publicly embedded somewhere outside of Tangler. OK, so it's only in the Tangler blog right now,

To test it you'll need to open this in a different browser. e.g. if you're in Firefox, you might have to open it in IE or Safari.

    OK, here goes.....

    http://blog.tangler.com/?page_id=195

    Enjoy.

    2007-07-28 12:51:53.0

It opens fine in a new FF tab for me.

    2007-07-28 13:29:41.0

    Pretty cool embed...

    2007-07-28 13:30:23.0

    Works great for me.

    2007-07-28 13:53:01.0

We need some little flag to say where you where writing your comment from. Might make it messy, or maybe a mouse over. you get me.

    2007-07-28 14:14:50.0

although everytime a new message comes through, my IE window takes focus

    2007-07-28 14:15:11.0

dammit that's annoying especially when I am writing these messages from firefox:)

    2007-07-28 14:15:34.0

    howdy all this is cool

    2007-07-28 14:16:10.0

Safari Windows just started working a couple of minutes after refresh

    2007-07-28 14:20:18.0

If I click 'try again' it works fine. Just first load doesn't work. Is that the same with you?

    2007-07-28 14:20:44.0
    ewH

After clicking 'Try Again', I can see the messages, but I can't send one.  First time I got an error, now I can't hit the send button or hit ctrl-enter

    2007-07-28 14:24:01.0

    trying again from safari windows

    2007-07-28 14:25:05.0

it looks like it was just being quirky because I wasn't signed in.  It allowed me to enter a message on top of the message box asking me to sign in or join tangler before

    2007-07-28 14:25:52.0

I'm ok with sending message after 'try again'.

    2007-07-28 14:44:09.0

When hitting Ctrl-Enter after typing message, I get the error:

    2007-07-28 14:45:34.0

Yep, getting all these bugs. We've lodged them now.

    2007-07-28 14:46:03.0

Making safari work with normal web development is a nightmare.  Hooray for the iPhone SDK....bah!

    2007-07-28 14:47:26.0

    2007-07-28 14:50:02.0

wow, clickable images are clickable after you post.

    2007-07-28 14:56:56.0

ewH -  I think it possibly turns the idea of a blog on its head ... instead of the blog being a Preach with a few comments back, the conversation can become the important part... Wow

    2007-07-28 14:57:03.0

@Bricoleur - Good point. My biggest complaint about traditional blog commenting is that the conversation gets lost and it's not very conducive to continuing dialog

    2007-07-28 15:00:54.0

I'm amazed at how smooth it is for an alpha .... a tip of the hat to your crew!

Hey, there's a bug I just found with the editor (on tangler.com, not the embed).  If I am typing while someone sends a new message, my cursor jumps to the beginning of the message

    2007-07-28 15:02:04.0

@EwH-- exactly.  I like the term Mick coined commversation (for community conversation) - it becomes possible with a medium like this....

    2007-07-28 15:02:07.0

Yes, that was reported to the guys last night by someone almost as soon as the version was uploaded.

    ewH

strange.  I can drag and drop one or more photos, but when I hit send or ctrl-enter, it just sends a blank message.  After that, I cannot drag and drop photos anymore without refreshing the page

    2007-07-28 15:10:35.0

idea: a wordpress plugin that would create a new tangler topic with the same title as your new blog post and then embed the widget on the bottom of the post for commenting

    2007-07-28 15:13:32.0

:) eWH - yep, sounds like a good idea. It's on the list. Have you made wordpress plugins?

    2007-07-28 15:20:07.0
    ewH

If I say yes, am I going to be volunteering to do so? :)

    2007-07-28 15:20:45.0

no, but ideas from people who know what they are doing is always helpful.

    2007-07-28 15:24:56.0
    ewH

j/k.  I have only played around with them a bit.  I'm far from being an expert in PHP

    2007-07-28 15:26:04.0

Do you guys have any kind of API in the works for creating a new group / post?

    2007-07-28 15:27:23.0

Yep, got an API and working on how to expose it the right way

    2007-07-28 15:28:03.0
    ewH

after the API is up, the plugin should be a cakewalk

    2007-07-28 15:28:33.0

There would probably need to be an option for disabling the current wordpress comments vs runinng both tangler and wordpress comments

    2007-07-28 15:30:19.0

Trackbacks are another story.  That may be where it gets a little tricky.  You would probably need to keep them enabled

    2007-07-28 15:31:28.0

signing out of the embed causes some weirdness, rendering the landing page in the frame is one thing. Then, I couldn't seem to "send" after logging back in. Not sure if it was because of that or because ewH edited his post.

    2007-07-28 15:33:42.0

Would need to make the topic have pages. Otherwise it would be very unwieldy on big blogs.

    2007-07-28 15:34:44.0

... the "send" and the edit seemed pretty simultaneous

    2007-07-28 15:35:11.0

@Fred I didn't see exactly that .... so it might be browser specific or as you quess could be to do with interaction with eWWH editing as I seem to get problem of not being able to send after editing my own comment.

    2007-07-28 15:36:28.0

    ewH

@Marty - are you telling us to shut up?:)

    2007-07-28 15:38:29.0

nah, just that epony didn't say anything. talk talk talk!

    2007-07-28 15:38:55.0

@Chapel.... I would use a separate topic for each item on the blog so I don't think in a low volume blog I'd have much trouble... but I think I saw mention that the Tangler crew are already looking at paging for topics because the success of Weewar group is causing problems in the full Tangler interface!

    2007-07-28 15:40:03.0

    trying to send a message

    2007-07-28 15:40:39.0

works on FF / Mac but not Safari / Mac

    2007-07-28 15:40:57.0
    ewH

another thing to keep in mind for the wordpress plugin, is that people like to be able to associate a link with their name.  A lot of traffic to my own blog comes from my comments on other blogs

    2007-07-28 15:40:58.0

@Bricoleur: Yeah, well small blogs it wont be an issue at all, but definitely in the bigger blogs it might be a huge load. Like they said, this is still alpha.

To anyone that remembers what I said about the Facebook possiblities, I was thinking of this actually. So Making this work in Facebook should be super easy imo.

    2007-07-28 15:43:18.0
    ewH

@chapel That's true.  It would eliminate the whole thing of trying to create a full hacked version specifically for facebook.  It seems these Tangler guys are pretty sharp:)

    2007-07-28 15:45:44.0

are you guys going to keep it required to join tangler to be able to comment on a topic from a widget?  I can haz openid plz

    2007-07-28 15:48:24.0

openid will happen, and it makes more sense for blogs.

    2007-07-28 15:48:54.0
    ewH

man, I can't think of anything you guys don't already have on your list.  I'm done trying to be smart for the day. :)

    2007-07-28 15:50:04.0

implementations (code libraries) of openid are still a little new, just waiting a little longer for them to mature.

    2007-07-28 15:50:49.0

    @eWH - you're testing is priceless.

    2007-07-28 15:50:49.0

sorry, ewh, we've been thinking about it for way too long.:) Not sure if we figured it all out though.

    2007-07-28 15:50:58.0

At this point we don't see embedded tangler as a replacement for commenting, more an augment. Though for some use cases it could work. Depends on the importance of things like registration and anonymous messaging.

Linking through to blogs as well as tangler profiles is something we need to address. We also want to fit in something to indicate where the message was sent from (such as "from Marty's Blog").

There's also some obvious alpha issues we need to fix, like no infinite scrolling on the message pane (like how topics work).

But it's a start for embedding. Lots of work to do.:)

    2007-07-28 15:55:18.0
    ewH

    yeah, it looks great.  Congrats.

    2007-07-28 15:57:04.0

by the way, beware of integrating openID authentication with Facebook authentication.  It's a tricky beast.  With all the iframe redirects, all hell breaks loose

    2007-07-28 15:57:58.0

We hacked around and got it to work for IE and Firefox, but no such luck with Safari since it treats redirects totally different than the others

    2007-07-28 15:59:16.0

ouch, yeah ok. haven't played with it yet.

    2007-07-28 16:04:46.0

let's talk more when we get up to open id implementation

    2007-07-28 16:05:05.0
    ewH

yeah, no problem.  I should know a little more about it by then anyway

This is a test message using Firefox 2.0.0.4 on Ubuntu

    2007-07-28 16:27:19.0

Found a similar bug to the Windows Safari bug in Firefox on Ubuntu.  If I am logged in on load, everything is fine.  If I am not logged in, the cursor is defaulted into the grayed out message box and I am able to type a message (but not send)

    2007-07-28 16:33:14.0

actually, that bug is the same for Firefox on Windows as well.  It's not specific to the embedded widget though. If I sign out of Tangler and then use a direct URL to the topic, my cursor is defaulted into the grayed out message box.  Even though the sign in or join message is there, I can still type over it

    2007-07-28 16:41:02.0

doesn't work on IE - am I right?

Or is it just spiting me?qq

    2007-07-28 19:22:40.0

Think its just you dekrazze1- I tried it earlier both iE and Firefox!

    2007-07-28 19:45:04.0

I have enough trouble keeping my thoughts together... imagine with two browser with two tabs each ... I use to think it was just me, myself and I.... but now I need a name for my fourth...

    2007-07-28 19:45:05.0

    How excellent!!!

    2007-07-28 19:45:16.0

    I use moi;)

    2007-07-28 19:45:25.0

Holy moly.... how cool is this?!

    2007-07-28 19:45:53.0

ahh ok me, myself, I and moi are all impressed with this.

    2007-07-28 19:45:57.0

    dek is too!

I love that Tangler never ceases to impress me!

    2007-07-28 19:46:26.0

There was quite a crowd around here earlier today... I've never seen it this busy on  Saturday (Aus Sunday) ... all jumping up and down with glee!

    2007-07-28 19:48:12.0

    hehehehehe

    Yeah, I saw!

    Excellent isn't it?

    2007-07-28 19:52:06.0

Just thought in testing video I would place a shameless plug (it does have a bit of Australian flavor at least... perhaps the only good part of the sound track). (pasted from the blog side)

    2007-07-29 15:59:49.0

I also posted directly to one of my other Groups after going to it  via the Tangler Search... so this truly is a full embed of all the Tangler functionality. I was unable to get to my own private groups to post a message due to limitations of size of this "box" on the blog....I presume that that is all being taken care in the exposure through the api... so this keeps getting more WoW all the time... I'm busily thinking of all the ways this power can be used

    2007-07-29 16:08:29.0

Smile - I was unable to assign smiley at the end of the last post... but works fine at the beginning and will test at end here (if visible  it worked so I have no idea why it wouldn't in the last post Smile

    hehehe She's cute:)

    Taken with your Blackberry?

    2007-07-29 17:31:23.0

Seems that way given the quality of the image but NO - taken with my  expensive new Sony 7.2 mp Sony Cyber-shot. We have a bit of a tradition going that every time I am scheduled to go away on a long o'seas trip we go out for b'fast prior. This was Double Bay this morning. The kind of a routine a kid likes .....

    2007-07-29 19:03:48.0

Yep.... breakfast outside sure beats cereal at home!;)

    2007-07-29 19:12:09.0

when is the embedded thing coming out? This would be the crème de la crème of tangler and make all others déclassé

    2007-07-30 15:50:26.0

thanks dekrazee1 i just view source and it looks like embedding it is fairly easy. Am I allowed to do it?

    2007-07-31 15:23:21.0

    Nice!

    2007-07-31 15:58:42.0

I tried to paste a screen shot but it made my browser hang.  I got a dialog box asking me if I wanted to stop a script from running otherwise my machine may become unresponsive.  I clicked no, and funny enough, IE7 did exactly as promised.

    2007-08-04 02:33:34.0

FF 2.0.6 logging in and testing through the embedded widget.

Awesome!! How about a standalone module for Drupal so we can have our 'own' Tangler?

    2007-08-04 08:53:46.0

    Drupal? Nice idea.

    Got code?

    2007-08-05 05:56:02.0

Yep, sure. Click on the 'Share' link (on the right of the topic title) and you can get the embed code from there

    2008-02-05 22:43:40.0

Ok I put it on my blog to test it and it is where I am typing from now

    2008-02-05 22:45:27.0

Errrm.... you might wanna embed a topic from your forum instead...:)

Only one "bug" so far - refreshing.

I'm typing from both "normal" tangler and from this embedded version at the same time, but the messages that I type in one version won't show up in the other.

    2008-02-06 22:37:53.0

    Whoa! that's cool!

    2008-02-06 22:39:14.0

But I guess it counts as abuse of the feature.

    2008-02-06 22:57:35.0

    InsaneGuy: That's.... Insane!:P

    2008-02-06 23:13:45.0

Sometimes you are even geekier than me... xD

    2008-02-06 23:19:15.0

I'm thinking about making a Greasemonkey user script that lets you create one of these bookmarklets with ease.

    2008-02-06 23:19:30.0

That should rest your case, Natanael.XP

    2008-02-06 23:20:33.0

Lawl. I have to learn Javascript.:P

And I'll have to get going with learning Python too...

    2008-02-06 23:25:56.0

Once you know enough of it, JavaScript can generate a whole page.

    2008-02-06 23:29:53.0

    Well, duh! xD

Python can too, but not client side... Yet!

    2008-02-06 23:31:24.0

Anyway, all you have to do to generate something like that is type "data:text/html," and then some raw HTML code on a single line.

(WARNING: Don't forget to wrap the HTML in <html><body></body><html> tags, or the code won't be rendered at all!)

    2008-02-07 12:23:17.0

    2008-02-07 12:25:52.0

    About the tag-things: Oh, you don't say?XP

This is the first time I saw Tangler update anything else than my own posts in real-time!:P

    2008-02-07 12:26:43.0

Awesome, can we do this with our Tangler's now?

    2008-02-18 17:05:50.0

Yep. Each topic you start will have its own embed code

    2008-02-18 17:06:29.0

Embed HTML can be found by clicking "Share" to the right of the topic title.

    2008-02-18 18:29:53.0

Very easy to embed and use!  Thanks, Tangler.

    2008-03-21 09:24:17.0

    Like it! :P

    Nice, Insano!

    2008-03-21 10:21:16.0

Okay, um... is it a requirement that only Tangler users can post?  That diminishes the usefulness of this dramatically, IMO.  If you took out that requirement, then people can embed little chat boxen into their sites and anonymous visitors could dive right in and chat.

Please tell me I'm mistaken, and I can turn on anonymous chat somewhere. :)

    2008-03-22 10:03:16.0

No, people do have to sign up to post.

    2008-03-22 18:30:23.0

Righto.  Well then I shall be dropping Tangler adoption on my site until such a feature is added[, if ever].  Thanks! :)

    2008-03-24 04:58:07.0

    That'll probably serve better, yes.

    2008-03-24 14:34:27.0

Don't forget to tell people that they'll need to use /nick [nickname] to change nickname.

    2008-03-24 14:51:27.0

Well, I am signing them on with the username they have from my site.  And thanks for reminding me about mibbit, it is working well for my needs as a game lobby.

    2008-03-24 18:34:17.0

Ello. Anyone here embedded tangler into a Joomla site - either in a content item or module?

    2008-05-05 19:40:01.0

    Can't say I have.

Have you tried it? I'm interested to know how it works

    2008-05-05 20:20:48.0

    *looks around* What is it?

    2008-05-07 21:32:40.0

testing. looks cool. how about also including the chat mode?

    2008-05-10 14:35:44.0

Yeah, we've been talking abt this internally. Makes sense to
