It's only an alpha, so don't tell the world about it just yet, but it's working well so far. And we'd like your help to test it.

Safari Windows just started working a couple of minutes after refresh

If I click 'try again' it works fine. Just first load doesn't work. Is that the same with you?

After clicking 'Try Again', I can see the messages, but I can't send one.  First time I got an error, now I can't hit the send button or hit ctrl-enter

it looks like it was just being quirky because I wasn't signed in.  It allowed me to enter a message on top of the message box asking me to sign in or join tangler before

I'm ok with sending message after 'try again'.

I cant click on that message box when it is gray, but it automatically places the cursor in there after I hit 'Try Again'

Safari has been very difficult to support relative to firefox.

Making safari work with normal web development is a nightmare.  Hooray for the iPhone SDK....bah!

@Bricoleur - Good point. My biggest complaint about traditional blog commenting is that the conversation gets lost and it's not very conducive to continuing dialog

Hey, there's a bug I just found with the editor (on tangler.com, not the embed).  If I am typing while someone sends a new message, my cursor jumps to the beginning of the message

@EwH-- exactly.  I like the term Mick coined commversation (for community conversation) - it becomes possible with a medium like this....

Yes, that was reported to the guys last night by someone almost as soon as the version was uploaded.

They indicated a fix should be in the works early next week... its really needed on the active topics!

having made a typo above I was given the opportunity to test the edit function from the bog... works properly as does the chat mode!

I'm in 2.0.0.5 on mac.

BTW - that's too many pics of me

strange.  I can drag and drop one or more photos, but when I hit send or ctrl-enter, it just sends a blank message.  After that, I cannot drag and drop photos anymore without refreshing the page

idea: a wordpress plugin that would create a new tangler topic with the same title as your new blog post and then embed the widget on the bottom of the post for commenting

after the API is up, the plugin should be a cakewalk

There would probably need to be an option for disabling the current wordpress comments vs runinng both tangler and wordpress comments

Trackbacks are another story.  That may be where it gets a little tricky.  You would probably need to keep them enabled

signing out of the embed causes some weirdness, rendering the landing page in the frame is one thing. Then, I couldn't seem to "send" after logging back in. Not sure if it was because of that or because ewH edited his post.

Would need to make the topic have pages. Otherwise it would be very unwieldy on big blogs.

@Fred I didn't see exactly that .... so it might be browser specific or as you quess could be to do with interaction with eWWH editing as I seem to get problem of not being able to send after editing my own comment.

I would use a separate topic for each item on the blog so I don't think in a low volume blog I'd have much trouble... but I think I saw mention that the Tangler crew are already looking at paging for topics because the success of Weewar group is causing problems in the full Tangler interface!

another thing to keep in mind for the wordpress plugin, is that people like to be able to associate a link with their name.  A lot of traffic to my own blog comes from my comments on other blogs

@Bricoleur: Yeah, well small blogs it wont be an issue at all, but definitely in the bigger blogs it might be a huge load. Like they said, this is still alpha.

To anyone that remembers what I said about the Facebook possiblities, I was thinking of this actually. So Making this work in Facebook should be super easy imo.

@chapel That's true.  It would eliminate the whole thing of trying to create a full hacked version specifically for facebook.  It seems these Tangler guys are pretty sharp

openid will happen, and it makes more sense for blogs.

implementations (code libraries) of openid are still a little new, just waiting a little longer for them to mature.

At this point we don't see embedded tangler as a replacement for commenting, more an augment. Though for some use cases it could work. Depends on the importance of things like registration and anonymous messaging.

Linking through to blogs as well as tangler profiles is something we need to address. We also want to fit in something to indicate where the message was sent from (such as "from Marty's Blog").

There's also some obvious alpha issues we need to fix, like no infinite scrolling on the message pane (like how topics work).

But it's a start for embedding. Lots of work to do.

by the way, beware of integrating openID authentication with Facebook authentication.  It's a tricky beast.  With all the iframe redirects, all hell breaks loose

We hacked around and got it to work for IE and Firefox, but no such luck with Safari since it treats redirects totally different than the others

This is a test message using Firefox 2.0.0.4 on Ubuntu

Found a similar bug to the Windows Safari bug in Firefox on Ubuntu.  If I am logged in on load, everything is fine.  If I am not logged in, the cursor is defaulted into the grayed out message box and I am able to type a message (but not send)

actually, that bug is the same for Firefox on Windows as well.  It's not specific to the embedded widget though. If I sign out of Tangler and then use a direct URL to the topic, my cursor is defaulted into the grayed out message box.  Even though the sign in or join message is there, I can still type over it

Tangler Search

I also posted directly to one of my other Groups after going to it  via the Tangler Search... so this truly is a full embed of all the Tangler functionality. I was unable to get to my own private groups to post a message due to limitations of size of this "box" on the blog....I presume that that is all being taken care in the exposure through the api... so this keeps getting more WoW all the time... I'm busily thinking of all the ways this power can be used

- I was unable to assign smiley at the end of the last post... but works fine at the beginning and will test at end here (if visible  it worked so I have no idea why it wouldn't in the last post

I tried to paste a screen shot but it made my browser hang.  I got a dialog box asking me if I wanted to stop a script from running otherwise my machine may become unresponsive.  I clicked no, and funny enough, IE7 did exactly as promised.

Okay, um... is it a requirement that only Tangler users can post?  That diminishes the usefulness of this dramatically, IMO.  If you took out that requirement, then people can embed little chat boxen into their sites and anonymous visitors could dive right in and chat.
