We're testing embedding on TechCrunch. It's only an alpha version, so take it easy on us!
when are you doing this?
Now.
I'm going to make sure the hamsters have had a big lunch!
Loads a little slow (we expected that). But seems to work pretty well. At least, so far.
Yes we really are out here... SorenG ![]()
where did my comment go?
cool![]()
<insert witty comment here>
How do you deal with spam, say if it was in this post?
i think members can be reported...?
I can't find it on TechCrunch, a link anyone?
Group owner will have full moderation rights. We hope to expand this at some point so it's not just up to one user.
Pierre.. above comments here... http://www.techcrunch.com/2007/07/31/tanglers-embedded-discussions

Pierre: Home page...scroll down about 2/3rds
and the member account - correct?
Ah, thanks.
testing testing
ha ha ok, I was scrolling down before it loads, so missing it![]()
We've got a longer delay here than on the other embedded sites.... still more than adequate for use though
At least in post mode if not chat mode
That's cool, it's almost like if I was writing on techcrunch![]()
If you want to have a conversation with yourself you can do it from both ends...![]()
lol
what happens if I post a video?
let's find out![]()
You know that's kind of sad.
Video ... It works... tried it yesterday but theres nothing like proving it for yourself!
sweet it works well![]()
yes indeed![]()
i am trying to watch the video - and each time someone comments i get pulled down to the bottom of the chat window... am sure you guys will fix that![]()
we probably need to add a pin, so you can fix the scroll.
I just did the firefox update 2.0.0.6, and it stills work![]()
Now that is amazing ![]()
I think FF 2.0.0.6 just patched some nasty security problem.
![]()
Yeah, the video thing needs fixing. More pins!
Cool though.
Hmm I just checked for updates (I'm on 2.0.0.3) and was told no new updates available! When was it released?
Maybe it's only for mac?![]()
That's probably it .... no worries about security on my windows version sounds about right![]()
lol![]()
if I go to firefox.com it offers me to download the 2.0.0.6
Release Date: July 30, 2007
Security Update: The following security issues have been fixed.
i am on 2.0.0.6 also
are we all still here?

I want to see a photo with two beers!
"And then he pulls the rubber glove over his..."
hi, congrats Marty and Co.
Tangler rocks.
I have to admit though, this Tangler group in embedded in a page is new to me (but extremely cool). Well done!
hmm.. not bad
hey marty et all.... congrats on this new feature. been looking forward to this.
big congrats! i just came here after reading the article!
Neat stuff
Thanks Joel
No problem
Are you chatting from the techcrunch post?
humm.. theres a bit of lag in the techcrunch applet...
Both the techcrunch post and also tangler
Have both open to the same thread
I was expecting it to be a little faster ![]()
joe - are you using the same browser?
There are some known issues with trying to have multiple topics for the same user open at the same time. We're working on that one.
(from tangler) yes
(from techcrunch) yes I am
oh ok
Where do you get the code for the applet?
Can People post anonymously?
if so recommend open one in firefox and another in IE
same browser - they are working on - right marty?
We haven't released the embed (iframe) code just yet. This is only an alpha test of the embedded version. Still bugs to work out.
And no, at present there is no anonymous posting. That's something we're looking at.
i dont believe so
If you email beta@tangler.com we can get you the embed code (with some alpha test info).
marty - you still around?
sure
Oh ok neat
ClayCook: Im running Linux so IE is not an option right now![]()
I was invited to a web2.0 meeting at my library (the county wants to improve it's online services) and I made the suggestion of using Tangler as a means of discussion. Let's see if they agree with my proposal.
Is there an easy way to reply to comments/posts?
By the way Marty, I am glad that the Tangler team supplied Linux user's with a notifier.
Marty, you know would be a crazy cool idea? Mix Tangler with Joost. That would be insane.
not sure if you directly reply to someones comment...
maybe just go...
@JoeIM - blah blah blah
@ClayCook - Suppose that would work
![]()
Yep, at the moment we don't support replying to a particular post and thus having multiple nested threads in one topic. Some people have asked for it, especially those familiar with traditional forums, so we're investigating alternatives to support this without complicating the message flow (which usually happens when you start nesting posts).
So far using @ seems to work, but we're looking at supporting a 'Quote' feature in the editor which will also link back to the original message. Another thing we're investigating is cross-linking topics, so if a discussion goes off-topic or you'd like to discuss a particular post in more detail, you'll have the ability to create a new topic (inline) and link it to the post. So it's kinda of like threading but not nested within the original topic.
Nesting destroys conversation... although it appears less elegant @you works very well - a reader can quickly see it and ignore it if they so desire, or scan or read... without disrupting flow... that is not the case if it is hidden or can even go multiple levels.
I like the model of this being a multi-part conversation (that is many to many) with a few side chats rather than a one-to-one conversation that has just been exposed to the many.
(Of course I have also lobbied elsewhere for the quote and link features
)
Yeah, lots of Linux users on the Tangler team... though most have switched to OSX recently.
(did I just start a flame war)
What do you guys think about a Tangler plugin for Joost?
i like the flowing conversation too. and @ seems to work for me.
@JoeM - interested to hear more about what you envisage with the Tangler/Joost plug in. I am not a big Joost user... do you mean people are watching a show in Joost and they can chat with other people watching it?
@ClayCook right, suppose you can chat or simply post about a particular show while watching. humm, I'll start a new thread about this topic.
We cen continue talking about Tangler on Joost over at -> http://www.tangler.com/group/11/topic/18555
hey I'm in this is cool
@claycook I am sure down the track there will be some neat clicks to be able to organise the thread to catch up on what has been discussed.
@mintigal: yes it is.![]()
@mintigal - i like how it is now![]()
this has been real fun, adios! ![]()
@mintigal - are you on TC page or inside Tangler ?
i am in Tangler
oh i am in TC
cool
Nice
Yup ..... Tangler ..... took a bunch of Aussies to do it. ![]()
![]()
I think for using @ you guys should auto link the name to the person, at least if it is spelled correctly. Or maybe have a button next to a persons name so you can reply to that exact comment they have made and it will populate the text box with @usersname and link it to the post that was made above. I think that might work the best imo.
I think that's actually quite brilliant chapel
Although it doesn't actually show the context of your reply, it still forces ppl to click back to see what you're replying to, but not a bad idea for most use cases I'd imagine.
Well quotes can get messy and take up more space than is needed. Maybe you could hover over the name and see an ajax popup of what was originally said. Or could have the quote collapsible and then that takes care of that.
Usually, the quote isn't necessary when there is not much space between the "utterance" and reply (just the @name is enough) ... its only required when a lot of bits have intervened or the exact item to be replied to is in the middle of a large 'utterance' that the the quote is required to re-establish context....
So I like Chapel's idea of the populating with@name and back-link as being sufficient for most cases ... As a total solution, how about if an area of the original "utterance" is highlighted when chapel's 'button' is pushed, then that part is inserted as a quote in the text box (after the @name and link).. and if no text is selected then only the @name and Link populates the text box.
ps. I actually prefer to have this type of function available via right mouse click...
This is beginning to sound really workable.
You guys must be reading our minds
The reply-to / quote feature that you've been discussing is very similar to how we see it working too - Click a button on a message, select part of message you'd like to quote (not sure yet on the implementation of this), that gets copied to the editor and formated in such a way that there is a link to the author and a link back to the original message. The collapsible option is a nice idea too, hadn't thought about that one.
yeah, collapsing, or maybe popout on hover, is a nice way of doing it. Having Next/Prev Reply arrows for navigation might be cool as well.
tangler is quite simply the best website I have come across.
That's great to hear Marzbar. You read the TechCrunch article / Comments on us? http://www.techcrunch.com/2007/07/31/tanglers-embedded-discussions
@Marty - "Having Next/Prev Reply arrows for navigation might be cool as well "--.that has the sound of threads done right -- flow and sub-stream flow all in one. Vive la Tangler difference.
The TC connection seems faster to me today -- was the (minor) problem yesterday connected to general performance problems from down under that I saw hinted at elsewhere?
Or are more hamsters at work?
All down to this hamster hard at work in Barcelona at 5.50 a.m.
Yeh I did - my post isn't displaying on my tangler browser I have open though - it's showing all the ones before and after it though!
@Alex: I was going to recommend a trip to one of the markets for you... but a quick check of the web shows none open till about 8....
marzbar - try a browser refresh... I sometimes saw that glitch yesterday where my browser was not picking up all changes while I was away on another window doing something.
[@Bric. Thanks! Have a weeks vacation and am only up so early having arrived from Oz yesterday. Off to Mallorca later this a.m. where there are plenty markets too. It has to be said,Barcelona is a compelling European city.] Oops. Better return to this thread.
Or ... Marzbar check you haven't got multiple tabs running - especially of the same Tangler page.
Refresh fixed it - I was flicking between tabs in firefox - this is one ever so tiny bug that needs to be squashed in an otherwise pest free environment!
Good stuff.
So if your message is yellow in the background, it means your an admin
?
One way of looking at it! Means it's unread.
now there's no messages with a yellow background ![]()
.... until you came along. ![]()
i've read your message and it's still yellow!
how about this one? is it yellow?![]()
it is now!
but it won't be by the time I read it again
Gotta love a bit of TanglerCrunch!
I just landed back in Sydney - moved from Coffee to Beer......
How about offering all blogs the option to use Tangler as a richer alternative to their basic comment functionality? Is this what you have in mind?
Me personally, I wouldn't use that for my blog since I would lose some control. For starters, the great Akismet plugin would no longer be able to do its job, and some other plugin or Tangler service would have to take its place.
Second, I wouldn't be able to see comments in an integrated fashion anymore in my Wordpress admin section, etc.
But that's just me; perhaps others could go for it. I might use Tangler as a little mini "leave a note" in the sidebar, though. A semi-chat, semi-guestbook sort of thing.
Hey Francois, Tangler could be an alternative to comments, but we know we have to add those features Pistos talks about first before being considered. We also don't just want to copy comments since comments (with Askimet) are already pretty good. We want to be different.
Pistos, good points, as we roll out more of the Tangle, those things should be more fun.
Great.
I can see the Tangler team is a dedicated and creative bunch; I look forward to seeing more of what you roll out in the coming quarters.
Oups, looks like I'm a bit late on the ball... I've just discovered Marty's blog, with posts on the topic of using Tangler for comments, and even on using Tangler for blogging (Marty's Tangle group). Great ideas. I have become a regular Tangler end-user in the context of the Particls beta and I find it very well fitted to beta testing forums: it's really nice to feel that close to an antipodean project development team. I feel that both Tangler and Particls have great innovation potential for better knowledge sharing. What I am missing - in both products - is a better visualisation of the relations between topics. Waiting to see both of them in RDF
. And to see how they can fit in the LinkingOpenData framework.

I'd love that too!
@Alex - well done on speeding things up!![]()
Hmmm, I love charts like that. They make me want to invest in whiteboard markers.
hello everyone
Hey Mr Mhendric - welcome into the Tangler.
Are any of our Tangler friends going to Techcrunch 20/40 next week?
Please send me a private message if you are and are keen to help us out.
First person to tell me they are going to TC40 will get a free Tangler t-shirt. I'll give it to you Monday morning.
me!
Hey mick
Hey - Wow!
Friday!!!!!
But it's really more about dicussion.
Deep and meaningful. Rich and heartfelt - just like me.
Not that chat is bad, but discussion is better.![]()
hey m&m
Hey Peter,
What you up to for the weekend?
Weekends are joyous.
I call them strongends.
Still hate weekends
I love Monday's, but I also love weekends.
For different reasons.
Monday is work joy.
Saturday is non-work joy. (sometimes work joy)
Problem seems to have resolved. Thanks.
I got 2 invites to the group - one from Mick, sent yesterday, and one from Mick, sent yesterday
Didn't see either of 'em yesterday..
neat
This is cool. Cant wait to use one on our site.
Well i only found out about this site over the past couple of days. Was featured in Webuser magazine here in the UK big feature about it. Good so far but feels like a glorifide chat room maybe?
Also a good site to check out is http://www.browzmi.com. Both are good in their ways.
Good luck! ![]()
Browzmi is cool, however it's a little different to Tangler. We compete as a forum solution, whereas Browzmi is for individuals.
I'd also say that getting a web annotation/social discussion system off the ground is a very difficult thing to do: 3rdvoice, odigo, shadows, chatsum and medium (I could dig up a few dozen more) have all tried this and failed. It's a good idea, just hard to get over the causality/value issue when starting out. Firefox is also developing a tool to integrate this into the browser for v3.0 - I'm not sure yet whether it will be a default inclusion, though I think that's one of the only ways to get over the issue.
Mmmmm Thanks for that Marty
Sending ...
