Hi everyone, tangler is going down at 1pm PST for the first in a series of major upgrades! We expect the system to be down for around 45 minutes unfortunately. See you on the other side.

    2008-01-04 12:44:31.0

It's alive! at last... if you are in the San Francisco bay area today you'll understand... nothing is working here today. Took some sweet talking to get her out there!

    2008-01-04 14:24:12.0

My home loaded in 5-10 seconds.... down from abt >1min.

    Dek = HAPPEE!XP

    2008-01-04 15:13:42.0

Such a big version... wow! So many things are better now.:)

    2008-01-04 15:14:07.0

Grand stuff (that's better than 'Good' stuff).

    2008-01-04 15:54:33.0

I dislike the fact that all the menus are now in a dropdown list. But I will most likely be accustomed to this by the time you reply ;)

Also seems odd... the topic list down the side of the group doesn't go all the way down to the bottom of the page... is that intentional?

    2008-01-05 02:49:55.0

It doesn't SK. There are ads below it

    2008-01-05 02:55:03.0

    Oh, ok

    heh.. adblock.

    2008-01-05 03:19:53.0

    I guessed as much;)

    2008-01-05 03:20:33.0

Adblock Plus.. a Greasemonkey script that removes Google Ads.. NoScript blocks googlesyndication..

    I rarely see adverts :)

    2008-01-05 03:22:49.0

    Same here...XP

... Am I going to get banned for making you make less money now? Undecided

    2008-01-05 13:03:45.0

    hahahah Of course not!

    2008-01-05 20:16:52.0

I notice that the topic list cannot be moved towards the left hand side any more, and so laterally increase the size of the page.

I used to find this feature very useful, any chance of getting it back?

    2008-01-05 23:21:36.0

It was useful if you wanted to view a rather large picture, or to see a poem in it's original format.

    2008-01-05 23:25:11.0

Thanks andro. I miss it too.

I guess we could have a similar system to the 'more space' link for the message input panel

    2008-01-06 02:06:08.0

That would be fine if it could be done.Smile

    2008-01-06 02:37:58.0

I'll put in a suggestion, and we'll see what happens:)

Being new to this site I can not comment on what appeared before but reading your comments and using my own observations I would like to suggest a few ideas later down the line:

    2008-01-06 02:57:31.0

    1. Via the profile menu, would it be possible to select if you would like your layout to be either drop down or the older method?

    2008-01-06 02:58:20.0

    Danke schön, deezee.Smile

    2. Have a fixed font size to the links suck as 'mark all as read' backy to website' etc items and leave the windows fonts dynamic via CTRL _mouse wheel (or menu selection)

    2008-01-06 03:00:12.0

    3. The option to turn off emoticons/animations - useful if you are connecting via mobile

    2008-01-06 03:00:58.0

    4. Fixing the notifier - I would like this feature but it triggers the spyware I have installed (pc toolds). comes up as adware-180 something or other and sees this as a high threat

    2008-01-06 03:02:11.0

    5. looking at integration into Vista sidebar as a widget

    2008-01-06 03:02:42.0

Thats just a quick knee jerk look. I will sit and think a bit later for other stuff you may think is useful - well ideas that is.

    2008-01-06 03:03:31.0

oh and have a pda friendly version - thinking mainly of iphone type stuff here. The next get iphone that is

    2008-01-06 03:05:59.0

    and your welcome

    2008-01-06 03:06:11.0

and what is the ulimate remit of tangler? just enhanced chat? technology/intelectual property that can be implemented, well sold to a google type thing? or a move towards social networking?

    2008-01-06 03:08:34.0

Yep, mobile versions will be coming a bit later.

    2008-01-06 03:11:59.0

There is a lot special about Tangler. Key things - very easy to use (no downloads or programming) and live (real time, multi media, social).

    Hope you like it.

    2008-01-06 03:12:46.0

    P.S. I'm from Tangler!:)

Skype/VOIP integration would also be nice. Working in the areas that I do, i forsee that this year will see a big increase in VOIP type systems, especially as call cost can become very cheap to landline. i.e for me to talk to Singapore from the UK is less than 3 cents (us) a minute, via Skype.

    2008-01-06 03:14:04.0

The simplicity is good. customization of the interface would be a geat asset for individuals. Mind you that has been done in the google desktop bit. the no-downloads is a boon. Are you looking at an option at a later date for paying subscribers - i.e a nominal fee for the month/year removes the ads? i know that they can be blocked but for the bulk of non-techie ppl, they live with these ads coz they don't know how to stop them

    2008-01-06 03:16:51.0

I want ability to embedd a group/forum into another website. (When) is that coming?

Personal CSS codes. Forum creators can already use their own CSS - I want to be able to set my own CSS for everything.

    2008-01-06 06:51:15.0

Natanael, you can create a new forum in Tangler and it can be your complete forum on your website right now. This is the first level of embedding. You just need to link to it. You will be able to do domain mapping in the not to distant future which will be another level.

Embedding an individual topic is something we alpha tested last August and need more work on to complete. It will hopefully be out in the next few months.

Overall, things look and feel better.  There were even some Opera drawing issues that seem to have been resolved, namely the z-indexing of the Recent Activity menu.  Nice.

I dunno if you guys have tested it in Opera, though, because I suspect your top-most bar of things is not drawing the way you want.  For starters, my name and icon are overlapping.  And I don't have any other menu besides Recent Activity, if there are any that are supposed to be up there

    2008-01-07 10:39:16.0

Things feel slightly faster, but I still want either an API or a lo-fi version. :P

    2008-01-07 10:40:02.0

The weewar group makes it obvious that thread paging is desperately needed.

    2008-01-07 10:40:33.0

Oh, and it's still an issue (in Opera) that threads don't get Marked as Read permanently just by visiting them.  I always have to manually "Mark All as Read" when I'm done with a particular forum.  (To see the problem, you have to go to a different forum, and return to the original forum, and you'll see the threads as Unread again).

    2008-01-07 10:49:27.0

Can you tell us more about Lo-fi version? you mean just the data dump?

    2008-01-07 12:20:56.0

And what does everyone else think about the speed?

    2008-01-07 12:22:01.0

Invision Power board does the lofi thing, for instance here's the lofi version, with the normal version. I often see search engines taking you to the lofi version.

I do not see this as a high priority for us (Tangler) at the very moment, perhaps down the road. I think we are well on the way in making speed acceptable for the majority of our users.

    2008-01-07 15:36:59.0

Three times in the last two days I have had messages vanish after pressing the send button.

In the recent past you would sometimes get a "We were unable to send your message, try again" type message, but not now. (the message just vanishes).

    Is it only me?

    2008-01-07 21:34:36.0

I have not seen that andro.

Can you tell us more please? were they long messages? Did they show when you reloaded the group etc?

    2008-01-07 21:35:55.0

One of the messages was long, and one of them contained pics, (I had to send those Ferrari pics twice yesterday) but the one today only contained about six lines.

They do not show when you reload the group, they just seem to disappear. The [Ctrl Z] trick does not work any more either.

    2008-01-07 21:45:12.0

It usually only happens once a day.

    2008-01-07 21:48:35.0

Okay, thanks andro. I'll look into it

    2008-01-07 21:50:33.0

    Thanks deezee.

It possibly only happens once because I then close IE and restart the browser and reload Tangler.

    2008-01-07 21:53:32.0

Is that IE 6 or IE 7?

    2008-01-07 21:59:10.0

@Mick - I want embedding using HTML code...

    2008-01-07 23:24:55.0

Re: Lofi: I only want it on account of the [previous] slowness of Tangler on older machines like mine.  If you can address the speed, then I think I can drop my request.  The current Jan 4 release seems to be running decently so far, but not in long threads.  As I said, you need thread paging.  Just do the same thing as you do for the topic list, except upside-down (get older messages when scrolling up).

    2008-01-08 09:54:00.0

Hi Pistos, we thought about threading the message list like we do with the topic list but there are issues with that.  The main issue is that we would want the list to jump to your last read message and continue from there and we are looking at it technically and how it would work in terms of the UI.

    2008-01-08 11:15:51.0

@natanael_L Yep, OK, we have an alpha for that, but it needs more work. Priv message me if you want to give it a go

    2008-01-08 18:08:24.0

Tell us What you think of the new version.

Different, but a great big good step forward

    2008-01-08 20:47:30.0

    Awful...awful...awful...awful...awful...just plain.........awful.

Once again: change will alway look good simply because it's different. But this is cold tea and crud on stale toast for breakfast for a bloke with a bad hangover.

    2008-01-09 05:30:00.0

    @Mick:

    1) I would like to try that. I already have two sites to try it out on.
    2) Eehrm... I think that you should stick with the old UI and add the new features.

    2008-01-09 09:31:17.0

John Robie: Care to say why you feel that way?

    2008-01-09 10:17:47.0

Phonga: I can appreciate the problem you're describing.  As a quick hack for the time being, I would be happy if you only showed me the new ("yellow") messages when I click a topic from the leftbar, and then have a link or button to Show All Messages In Thread.

Honestly, try to actually read and use the weewar forum in a little test drive.  There are mega threads in there, sometimes with images, and it is unwieldly to have to go through 3.5 MB and 30 seconds load time just to see one or two new posts.

Anyway, I appreciate that you're talking about the issue with me, and that the dev team at least has the issue on the drawing board to brainstorm possible solutions.

    2008-01-09 10:20:07.0

Could you allow using pages just like in a regular forum? You know - 25 posts and then there's a new page. Sometimes it may be easier to find the latest posts and stuff that way (and in some topics it will be nicer to slow PC's like mine).

    2008-01-09 10:41:09.0

Pistos: Ok i get what you are saying, we have to discuss it with the rest of the team but that is an option that we shall look at.

In terms of paging in the standard forum sense, we need to look at it to see if it will work for everyone.  I agree that waiting for 30 seconds is way too long, heck i get bored after 3 seconds.  So we are trying to find a solution that we think would fit the needs of most of our users and also still be usable.  I think the only thing with paging is that you start to loose the semi-real time aspect of the application.  We would have to put some indicator to inform you of message events etc, and then we have to figure out how to take you to that event if you choose to see it.

It is not a simple issue to resolve considering the nature of our application but we are looking into it, and thanks for your inputs and please continue with them ... we are listening.

    2008-01-09 11:38:41.0

Paging works for me.. it'd mean there'd be fewer topics where I have to wait for all the pictures to load before attempting to read anything (otherwise the page keeps jumping down 3 inches every time a picture loads), as well as lessening the load time overall.

    2008-01-09 15:38:25.0

Phonga: Thank you very much for reading and responding.  It is much appreciated.

You may consider opening up an API sooner, then, because honestly, I'd just code all of this for you (well, for myself), and save you guys the time and headache.
