Search is one of the things that will become more important as Tangler grows.

I think we can do a better job than we have now. So help us make it better.

What do you want to search for?

How do you what to search?

Where do you want to search from?

What parameters do you want to use?

How do you want to see search results?

When I'm in a forum, I don't want the search box to only search in the forum. It's so ennoying that I think of leaving Tangler everytime I'm in a forum and are about to search for something. I don't want to search only in that forum. You could put the results for the active forum in a list of it's own or out them at the top.

There should at least be a drop down list next to the search bar where the user can choose what to search. Let the user choose what should be the default option.

    Parameters that I want:

Obvious: AND, OR, NOT (aka. minus signs)

More "complex": Paranthesis (a (), such as A OR (B C) - will search for anything with A or B and C in any order.

    forum:(Forum name), post:(post content), topic:(topic name)

    And time/date related stuff...

Yes, I am an all-in-one geek. (Software geek, search geek, hardware geek, science geek, etc...:P)

Yeah, the drop down is coming soon.

One of my favorite Google features is being able to put.words.in.a.phrase.using.point (aka full stop in Strine) "instead of having to find the shift key and use double quotes".

    Oh! I didn't know that!

You need more metadata on the search results.  Stuff like timestamp of post, topic title, forum, poster name, and even the first 100-200 characters of the post body.  Ability to sort search results, too.

Yup, more data is really needed on search results!

I find that search terms are only searched for as that exact word. i.e a search for 'book' will not return on any instances of the word 'books'.

This sort of fuzzy(ness) to the search would be  nice.

Oh, by the way, is there a wildcard character for search? or maybe (I am lazy here since I have not searched this at all on your site) could you show me any info on how the search works at the moment.

    ThanksWink

There isn't a wildcard character for search as far as I know.

What we have right now is pretty basic, and have a way to go to improving it.

The more options you can add to either widen or narrow the search the better - search all of Tangler, search the current forum (or another specified forum), search just the forums you subscribe to, search specifically for a post or for a topic or for a forum (for when you're looking for a specific thing someone said, a discussion you've forgotten the location of or a new forum to get into.

Also more advanced search options, which have been mentioned before - AND/OR/NOT, wildcards etc.

Well thats quite some shopping list mate!

    We could start wit boolian.

You already have the option to search the topic you are in or the whole of Tangler (public forums that is)
if you add boolian search with a touch of fuzzyness (i.e. book will also search books, booked, booking) would be a great step

Hope that is not too much of a loaded shopping list Embarassed

If you provide a big shopping list, even if they aren't able to do all of it, there's a better chance of more of it getting done than if you just ask for one thing :P

I rarely use the search anyway, so don't worry about filling my every demand XP

    2008-11-29 12:25:14.0

LOL! We aren't worried about filling every demand;)

    2008-11-29 19:30:09.0

    I guessed, that's why I made so many :P

Like I said, put a big list in front of you and we might end up with more that way XP

As always, so much to do, so little everything-else:)

I do not want to give the dev the impression that the users are an insatiable beast always wanting more...... but they are

    2008-11-29 20:31:00.0

Well, that depends on the type of users I find.

Devs and techy people know the technology and what's out there, so they tend to suggest more than someone without that background.

    Just my observation.
