Would be cool if we had "tabs" so we could converse in multiple topics in the same browser window.
Would indeed
Code minions, get on it! ![]()
What about a hack using a browser's tabs?![]()
I'm kidding... it is something we've considered
I'd rather just use my browser's tabs, TBH... so you should have a link to view a topic on its own (no left-side topic list). Then we can choose to open those links in new tabs ourselves.
Why no topic list?
Pistos: No. Seriously, no. I want them visible all the time. You'll hate yourself later when you discover what you've done if they end up on a page of their own.
I'm just describing the [largely successful] modus operandi of traditional forum software. They have thread lists in single HTTP pages, then you can click on the thread links, and threads would be presented in their own pages, without the thread list on the same page. That allowed veteran web surfers to do things like shift-click on the thread links to open them in new tabs while keeping the thread list in its own tab/page.
This is Tangler. End of story. Sure, there should be "normal" links in the list to the left so that the topics can be opened in new tabs, but the list must stay.
Topics can already be opened in individual tabs, but I've noticed that ctrl+click doesn't quite do the trick. Have to right click + open in tab.
No such trouble from the links on the home page.
I have to say that taking the topic list away seems counter-intuitive to me
*breathes deeply* Lady and gentleman, I believe we have a severe misunderstanding. I will make one final attempt at explaining myself, after which time, should there be further imprecision on your parts in your perception of my proposal, I shall instead proceed to ignore this thread thenceforce, averting the risk of heart failure thereby. Allow me to quote myself:
Ah, the joys of proprietary editors... Tangler, thou dost prevent me from pasting from my own clipboard! May you be infested with a thousand fleas in your sleep, you giver of unending usability headaches! *shakes a fist repeatedly*
/me quotes himself, but by manually typing the whole paragraph, instead of pasting from clipboard like any sane application would permit:

Now, let us review. The existing setup for a given forum is to have a topic list down the left, and, upon clicking on a given topic, the post list on the right for the selected topic. <stressed clarification> I don't have a problem with this setup.</stressed clarification>
The original poster is inquiring about the possibility of implementing topic tabs.
My proposal is to have an additional link for each topic. You could situate it perhaps beside the clickable topic titles in the left-hand list. This additional link would send a full HTTP request for a page containing the post list (i.e. that which is typically in the right-hand frame). If you click on this additional link, it would replace your current browser contents with the post-only page, but if you use your browser's already-inherent capability to open links in new tabs/windows to open the additional link, then your normal view (left-hand topic list, right-hand post list) stays in the existing tab, and an additional page would open in another tab, containing only the post list. This feature would be in additionto the current left-right setup.
I should clarify that this adds to what we already have and are used to in Tangler. I hope it's clear that I am proposing an addition, something new. This should not replace existing behaviour.
Did I mention this is an addition? I hope so.
There. Now I should hope not a soul shall require further clarification on this matter. Should such astounding circumstances arise, all can rest assured that the only thing further I shall impart will be copious pity, and nary a mosquito's wing flap worth of my breath.
Have a nice day.
AHHhhhhh I get it!
(Thank God.
)
And yeah, that would be handy
And oh, you can copy and paste.... why can't you?
dek: I'll find the old thread, or post a new one for that topic.
Oh!
Would appreciate that. Thanks
Pistos: Haha, lol.![]()
I don't get it. Could you explain some more?
If possible, visual aids are always a great help ![]()
LOL!
Terrible....

If this 'tab' means 'category', I'd raise my hand. It's OK if you only have a few threads, but eventually you'll end up with hundreds of threads which you want to tidy up. Search forum function is only good when you are searching for a particular topic, but not for a whole bunch.
Tabs mean tabs like in tabs. Like having several topics open at the same time.
And categories are good too.
Anyway, mibbit.com have a decent solution for tabs in AJAX, go ask there how it's done if you want to. http://www.mibbit.com
we need a name for those kind of tabs. maybe tabs 2.0? half joking half serious
Topic/Forum tabs.
