You can access unread private messages by clicking on the Recent Activity menu.

You can also get to the Private Conversation with a contact by going to 'My Friends' page (via the screen name menu) or by clicking on the 'Chat to Friend' link in the profile hovers. (You'll see the profile hover when you hover over a name in a topic)
