Monday, September 17, Day 1
3:45 pm - 5:00 pm
4th five presenting companies
Session Topic: Crowdsourcing
Session just started.
Saw Financial Cake, looks great. Aggregating info on what people are investing in. If it works, it's a billion dollar company.
Docstoc
Sounded boring to begin with but they got 3 guys in the crowd to get the use case across. Nice.
Tagging of broadly useful documents by the community.
Is than an exchange for documents? Could be useful for internal stuff like HR forms, etc.
You can request docs and they'll tell you when they find them.
A bit like an exchange.
Yeah, HR, LOI's, base contracts, research, stories, etc.
docstoc sounds pretty cool
does it cache content from the web? bookmarks goes stale
Here is me in the audience. ;

uhm ok... thanks![]()
I look interested don't I?
Here is my view of the stage;

"hmmm who was that cute blonde in the demo pit?"
Now we have Teach The People.
Peer-to-peer education.
Where is the cute blonde?
Are they doing some kind of revenue share? Looks like it from the site.
Sorry I'm not blonde.
I've heard of a couple of other things like Teach The People
Yep, revenue share or more like you can make money by educating and building a community and we'll take somerevenue.
hmm yea... nice radio active green too![]()
OK, next company.
![]()
Bring together innovators, partners and fans. They want to develop electronic products.
A bit like http://www.cambrianhouse.com which is for web apps, but for hardware.
I think the actual manufacturing barriers is pretty high here. Unless big companies can execute and reward the tool.
Some pretty cool gadgets.
A mobile, Facebook device. - I need convergence, not divergence.
Ponoko up now - New Zealand I think .
how would that compete with a mobile facebook app... on iphone or otherwise
"imagine wanting to create a toy"
He's reading off the screen - I hate that.
Ahh, now pictures, and a story - cool.
@peter - it was just an example.
let's see some pics!
Hmmm, trying. Hang on.
Ponoko looks interesting, but the use case seems a little hard. And there is too much silence in the demo.
It's apparently about a personal manufacturing platform.
Toys was just an example.
He's making the toy now.
Here is a bad pic from my isight (my camera is awol)

Whoa, room looks packed
The crowd spirit guy;

as in designing a toy?
is everybody just looking at their own screens ?:)
These ones were a little slow.
true story
I hope this panel is a little more hard hitting. I'm here to learn!
Let the gloves come off.
hmm.. so who was the best in this section.. ?
Yeah, been a little weak so far... let's see them fight!
Yeah, it's a little soft. But 5 companies, and 4 investors no one wants too look bad.
Focus on what they like.
Get Arrington up there!
docstoc is my favorite. may integrate it into our product.
I can see Real Estate Agents using it to share Strata Minutes, Floor Plans, etc
Yeah, i don't know. Docstoc could be OK, but I'm not sure there is millions of use cases a year.
need some straight shooting!
I like Financial Cake.
If people share the data then it will work.
Don is asking whether people will lie or might not put up info unless they have a good portfolio.
its a tough call between the two.. but i prefer docstoc better... not too much into stocks...
I'm not into stocks much either (i'm into mortgages
) But as a business, I think it will be big.
Teach The People could work but to get distribution right it's really really hard.
I'm not into playing with stocks either. I have stocks, invest once a year with my RRSP's but follow the advice of A Random Walk down Wall Street and just leave them alone for the most part. My second pick would be TeachthePeople
Yossi is asking tough questions of Ron about whether he is using Financial Cake.
Ron uses 20% of the products he invests in.
Yossi - "How do you expect us to trust the other 80%?"
Teach the people is good.. but somehow i feel it wouldnt have a mass appeal..
wit
I like doc stock for most non-legal forms I'd use. It's a way of leveraging the web to do what I've always done: collect docs I like, modify and recycle. Why re-invent a lot of the boring stuff?
I'm surprised there are not more people in here. Perhaps the should not hide this feature below the fold, it is really buried.
Yeah, thanks Ubertor - we might open it a bit more 2moro. Just watching the load.
it is pretty well hidden
Mick, using AWS at all?
We're currently working with RightScale to see if we can migrate from RackSpace. Seems like a really cool solution if we can get it to work with our DNS issues.
This thing also takes its sweet time to load up too..![]()
Yeah, on the wifi, it's not so good. Working on it.
ubertor, nope, fairly conventional hosting at this point
we have a few special requirements![]()
I can understand that. For what it is worth, you have a great concept; hope it all works out and you can scale with your growth.
thanks much!
I'm using Tangler in one tab and Campfire in the other to communicate with our dev team. You guys have a great thing going.
hey guys .. do you have any idea , when can we see the video clips for the sessions..?
Has it been filmed?
no idea stupid_dk, there was rumour of a justin.tv person around but apparently that feed went away
Hey, here with Don from Streamy
All we have got is the start up video with PowerSet guys presenting their stuff..
there should be something.. but i just hate to wait..
Hey Don!
I just registered at Streamy! ... if there is any special incantation necessary to get a quick response, perhaps Don could spill the beans... or put my name on the fast track!
I'm all for something that will turn my RSS into something usable rather than being the constant reminder I have of things I haven't looked at ![]()
How does streamy help that?
According to their blog:
We have created a system that aggregates syndicated content, channels it through your new and existing social networks, and creates a sum that is greater than its parts. Otherwise, as an aggregator, we do not replace tools - we mesh them into a new experience.
But if Don is still there, perhaps he could give us the elevator speech!
Oh! Yep, I remember now...
Someone posted that cool clip of Stream at work! Looked cool
Here's a video introduction:
yeah, that's the one! Thanks Bric![]()
Streamy has been fairly useful for me. It isn't quite a competitor with Feed Readers (at least that's not how I used it). It seems to simply aggregate news from lots of different sources and uses Groups to narrow the news you get into more tailored pages.
Gotta love embedding.
Nice picture Karen!
Now I get it...
Was wondering what pic you were referring to
(for those in Tangler also confused - this topic is currently embedded in Tangler blog)
Ah, sorry, should have mentioned that! (having a from blog.tangler.com would be a good addiiton to embedding).
yeah
Or a link/notice in the Tangler topic to tell us it's been embedded, and where
Oh Mick, I feel like a schoolie! I'm keen as mustard to nick one of dem shirts. Marty lives nearby now, easy drop off in SOMA. Better yet, don't tell Cris, I can trade ya for plasqbot T's
(sorry boss)
brian / eponymousX - busted!
hehe
I'm keen to get one of these also! They look great.
btw, glad Ape Do Good worked out for you. They are great.
This embedable discussion widget is nice too! (first time I've used it)
Just waiting on my delivery of shirts... shouldn't be too long.
Send me your mailing address guys and I'll get a shirt to you!
