When Scoble tried to export his friend's email addresses from Facebook  (notice I didn't say 'ran a script to scrape other people's personal data') wasn't he just trying to organise his address book? (See here also.)

I acually don't quite agree with my title here. I just wanted to get your attention. My email address is my data not yours, but... if I approve you to be my friend on Facebook, I am giving you a personal. non-exclusive license to use that email address to contact me. You can move it to your phone, invite me to be your friend on Myspace, add it to your Exchange address book. Yes, you can even export it from Facebook. As part of our un-written, fair use contract you will not abuse that email address by using it as your own, publishing it to the web or otherwise making it available to spammers but non of that happens if you export it from Facebook.

Yeah, I agree. If you don't want your friends (or other social network contacts) to contact you via your e-mail address, don't put it up!

I see it being the same thing as giving your phone number out. When you give someone your number, you give them not only access to call you, you also give them access to handle it. What I mean when I say that is you give them the 'permission' (for lack of a better word) to write it in their family phonebook, their PDA, mobile etc etc. You don't say 'You can only put my number in your phone, and no where else'.

That is essentially how I see what Scoble was doing. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. If you give him permission to have your e-mail address (note: In facebook, you essentially give that permission twice) he can take it and put it where ever he wants.

This is separate from if he gives your address to someone else - that brings in a third party, and isn't inherent in the normal permission process.

Nah, I'm sure you have lots to add to everything. It just so happened I had been following this one, and understood it enough to think about it a little while. Not to mention I'm in the same time zone as Phil
