Safari Beats IE, Firefox in Browser Speed Trials

Apple's contention that the beta of Safari 3 for Windows loads pages up to twice as fast as its rivals, however, is a bit of a stretch, Czeiszperger said. In June, when Apple CEO Steve Jobs unveiled Safari for Windows at the Worldwide Developers Conference, he claimed Safari loaded pages twice as fast as IE 7, 1.6 times faster than Firefox. "What we've got here is...the fastest browser on Windows," said Jobs at the time.

WPI's measurements backed up Jobs' claim that Safari was 1.6 times faster than Firefox -- its numbers showed it to be 1.7 times faster -- but not the boast about Safari's thumping of IE. There, WPI's ratio for Safari was only 1.4 times faster -- not twice as fast, as Jobs claimed. The ratios for the page loads from the remote servers and the canned editions on the network were identical, said Czeiszperger in an interview Wednesday. "That was a good validation that the live measurements were accurate," he said.

I don't see that. I use Safari (win), IE 7 and Firefox, and in my experience, Safari is the slowest!!

    2007-10-25 23:35:28.0

    ...followed by crappy IE7 Yell

    Firofox FTW!

    XP

    2007-10-25 23:35:59.0

    yup, Firefox FTW! XP

When I first got Firefox I did a quick comparison against IE and found Firefox loaded things much quicker, add to that all its extensions and it's the only browser for SK XP

    2007-10-26 08:18:39.0

Now if only they could fix those memory issues....

...I'd say the same thing you did there ^^

    ;)

    2007-10-26 08:40:33.0

Yeah, memory usage is a problem - as we speak Firefox is occupying 183,000k on my computer

    2007-10-26 08:55:11.0

To be honest I'm surprised the poor thing is still able to run properly with that block taken out

    2007-10-26 08:55:35.0

hahaha Mine starts complaining at 140 000 + (Which doesn't take very long to reach mind you)

    2007-10-26 22:46:36.0

Normally I start getting an attack of the slows at 100,000k so I don't know how it survived to 180 without me noticing

    2007-10-27 03:37:35.0

Safari on Windows is pretty fast, much much faster than firefox. You really do feel the difference. It also takes just about a second to open, whereas firefox needs 3 to 6 seconds depending on your computer. The downside is, Safari on Windows crashes way to often. On my iBook I don't feel a difference between Safari and Firefox, I use Safari though because I just have 512 MB RAM on my iBook and Firefox would eat it up in no time.

    2007-12-29 01:23:20.0

I don't see that behaviour on my comp at all

    2007-12-29 01:54:29.0

As in, it isn't faster and doesn't launch faster either

    2007-12-29 01:54:58.0
    wtf

    2007-12-29 02:01:23.0

    I am on FF2...

    2007-12-29 02:02:23.0

    FF2: 155 MiB RAM, 144 MiB page file - And I'm using 28 active add-ons

I've got 256 MB RAM - And FF ain't slow over here! IE starts quicker then FF, but I'll have to wait forever before it's "unfreezed" and usable.

    2007-12-29 03:22:26.0

Yeah... what's with the IE7 freezing?

    2007-12-29 03:24:50.0

    LOL! good point

    2007-12-29 03:26:47.0

    Just as always...XP

They have +5000 developers, and each of them knows probably 0,1% of the others. What can you expect from that?

    2007-12-29 03:28:19.0

    Can't be that bad:O

    2007-12-29 03:30:40.0
    wtf

    2007-12-29 03:31:18.0

    They've done well thus far...

    2007-12-29 03:33:08.0
    wtf

    2007-12-29 03:36:44.0

No... but it's like mac. Those that love it, do, and those that hate it wanna burn down microsoft's offices

    2007-12-29 03:37:53.0

"Have you used vista?" - My sister have WinVista home basic.

It so crappy that it should be illegal. It's like drugs - When you have used it for a while you can't live without it, it messes up your brain and it costs more than you can afford

    2007-12-29 03:39:46.0
    wtf

    2007-12-29 03:44:35.0

    Ah yes.... I get it...

But the counter to that is that sometimes people don't like change? And as I see it Vista is a big change from XP?

    2007-12-29 03:46:23.0
    wtf

    2007-12-29 03:47:58.0

Well, people are changing to Linux because they want to, so it have to be that fact that M$ are making us buy Vista when we want something that actually works that are causing it.

    2007-12-29 03:48:10.0

*Sigh* Wouldn't it be nice if they got it right?

    2007-12-29 03:50:15.0

The only good thing with their products is that averything looks the same so that you can se that it's created by a single company.

Oh, wait - you can't anymore in Vista!

    2007-12-29 03:52:19.0

    Vista is pretty...

    2007-12-29 03:56:15.0

From what I've seen. I wouldn't mind a Vista 'skin' on XP

    2007-12-29 03:56:40.0
    wtf

    2007-12-29 03:58:24.0

Well - just click on everything there is to click on in Vista, and soon you'll get confused because everything don't look the same.

    2007-12-29 03:58:57.0

@wtf I doubt my current comp has the stuff needed to run it

    2007-12-29 04:01:42.0

@Natanael I imagine it would be like using Office07, and I got used to that easily enough

    2007-12-29 04:02:06.0

I want to stab whoever decided menus weren't a good interface choice. A decent menu structure can give you far more options than their shitty "ribbon". Unless the thing you want to do is common enough for their to be a button specifically for it, you're screwed. Plus some of the placements of thing x under tab y are weird.

    2007-12-29 06:25:28.0

It's supposed to be really fast, but I'll reserve judgement till I use it.

The current Windows version is crap, imho

    2008-03-18 08:08:23.0

I'll check it out. I'm going to check if it can compare with Opera, that won't let me switch the place off the tab bar and the "adress bar".

    2008-03-18 09:03:09.0

I'm ashamed to admit that I still use IE for my most basic of internet needs. I use FF for things like tangler, youtube, and the like because of the speed and ultimate overall better performance. But if i'm just doing a quick email or facebook check, then its IE because it LOADS quicker (not performance-wise, its just more readily accessible than FF)

    2008-03-23 10:29:21.0

and I've set tabs for my homepage so that it opens 3 things at once so i'm in and out in the quickest time Wink

    2008-03-23 10:30:35.0

IE only loads quicker because of "better" OS integration (who wants to integrate with Windows?), and less addons. :P

Anyway, try Prism if you want to access certain sites quickly. Very quickly. You can think of Prism as a domain-locked mini browser, primarily for webapps. It's based on the same browser engine as FF3.

http://labs.mozilla.org/ - Just look for Prism over there.

    2008-03-24 11:16:58.0

IE doesn't load fast for me at all.... Abt the same as FF
