Dek needs help yet again....
When I try to shut down or restart my comp, it doesn't complete the process, so it basically stops at the last 'windows is shutting down' blue screen.
I thought it might have been the last thing I installed, and I've uninstalled that, but no go.
I'm on XP, reformatted abt 4 months ago.
Any ideas?![]()
Leave it for a really long time and see if it eventually does shut down.
That way you know if it's a really long delay for some reason, or an problem with the actual shut-down process itself
I have.... I left it. Nothing happened![]()
Typically Windows to stop with blue screens....
On my PC "logonui.exe" crashes sometimes when trying to log off, shut down, restart or similiar. However, it usually works when I try to log off from inside Task Manager. Sometimes it works to shut down the PC from Task Manager, but not always.
Extremely irritating.
So, any solutions?
I know a possible solution to your problem (my PC were fixed), but it was by some software that I barely remember the name of. Sorry, but I'll try to find it. *searching*
I'd really appreciate that. Thanks!
HAHA this reminded me of something I did only a few days back.
I drove myself absoltely crazy when my pc wouldn't close windows (with [x]) ...I tried, again and again, i Ctrl-Alt-Del'd it and Task Managered' it but to no avail. The windows just wouldn't close! After trying absolutely everything I could think of (I even resulted to using cmd at one stage) I just sat and stared in despair at my screen.
Just before I was about to reboot, I realised one thing:
The "windows" I had been trying to close were actually part of a screenshot of my desktop!!
AAARRRRGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!
I don't know what's worse, that I didn't realise, or that it took me so long to figure it out!!
In the end, I just sat back and laughed. I laughed so hard at myself I almost had tears coming from my eyes!

I'm having problems with standby mode at the moment... I hit it onto standby and it goes through the motions, screen goes dark, but the internal fans keep spinning and the light on the front keeps blinking away as normal. Normally on standby the power button brings it out, but now it does nothing - to get it to turn back on again I have to turn it all the way off by holding down the power button or flicking the power switch on the back.
No idea what's going on, but its really annoying me. I like standby for the quick resume time so not being able to use it is bugging me.
ROFLing @ Morgan!!
SK - that doesn't sound good...
Hey, do you have Skype running? I realised that having Skype launch on start up was affecting the process
Could be something along those lines?
Don't have Skype, don't think I've installed anything new recently either...
hmmmm
"hmmmm"? Try contacting MS.
haha, hah, ha..... you're kidding right?
As far as I'm aware, they don't offer tech support for anything approaching free, you either need to have a paid business-support account or stump up on the spot to even get as far as having them reply to your email.
Well, seems they do give you 2 free support requests before they start charging you (at £46 a throw)
Oh, how predictable, the page you go through to after clicking the "use this option" type button cannot be found. Maybe I should try again with IE or something...
I'm not even sure this actually is an option for normal users, there was something about what you need in order to avail yourself of their support that I didn't really bother reading.
Using IE I got as far as reading the legal notice and entering an automated process that I can only assume leads eventually to sending someone an email. Unfortunately it seems I do not qualify for unpaid support for some reason...
Hey SK, this might help? http://emcp.com/college_resource_centers/resourcefile.php?ID=19526
Well its a desktop not a laptop, and I don't think any of the things mentioned really apply... can't think of any new devices that haven't been there since before it stopped working
D'oh! All this while I was thinking it was a lappie.
That's the thing SK, when I was having the start up/shut down issues, it wasn't because of anything new I had installed. I hadn't.
When I searched for a solution, there were a lot of troubleshooting guides that said it was a windows (and windows settings) related issue. Some also mentioned BIOS settings. (It was my last resort, which ended up in me having to reformat my comp
)
... do not want.
I thought that might end up being the solution, but I'd really rather not have to do that.
Yeah, I know what you mean.
But in the course of my research when I was having my issues, I kept reading that shut down/start up problems eventually snowball into something else.
so,
Good luck mate
All my data is safely tucked away on a separate hard drive, the only thing on C: is Windows and installed programs/drivers, which I would have to reinstall anyway.
If it progresses into something worse... then yeah, I'll need to reformat, but until then I can live with turning it off or leaving it on.
heh, not sure if there's anyone I know in real life that's more of a tech-head than I am, I tried posting on my tech-help message board of choice (and of course here) but no reply yet..
Tried Google, but most people seem to have the problem that it wakes itself up again a few minutes after going onto standby... my problem is that it won't wake up (or indeed completely go to sleep)
CTH?
If that's an acronym for the cybertechhelp.com forum, then yes
I thought I recognized those specs.
hehe, always weird when internet paths cross unexpectedly

I didn't think you'd know anyone more techy than you... I was referring to the online avenue.
You've just reminded me that I can reformat my comp at home, and use it for storage! (Since it already has two separate hard drives.)
