Jason Calacanis wrote this gem today - How to save money running a startup (17 really good tips)
There are some good tips in it, like getting 2 monitors, invest in chairs (I still haven't found the right one) etc.
But one comment has created a storm it seems.
“Fire people who are not workaholics… come on folks, this is startup life, it’s not a game. go work at the post office or stabucks [sic] if you want balance in your life. For realz.”
Actually, I have issues with a lot of his other statements, like buying lunch for everyone, buying home computers for people at home etc.
It's his intentions that worry me, not his (suggested) actions. Looks like all he wants from his employees are drones?
A regular day in the office for me is showing up later than everyone, going for coffees, having lunch with people sometimes.
However, I work hard, and I am a workaholic, but I do it because I love what I do, and I love the company, the product, my team mates.
My work is my life. The hours I work would please Jason. But I wouldn't work for him. Sounds like he knows nothing about passion.
And to me, startups are about passion. So, how much does he really know about running a startup?
He's since modified his post to say "fire people who don't love their work", so apparently he does see things the same way that you do.
In a way it's good that he originally used a poor choice of words, because otherwise I probably wouldn't have heard about his post. I love his post, especially because most of the things he recommends as money-savers also make employees happier!

Buying lunch for employees would be nice, but not if they held meetings during that time!
Bet they'd soon get sick of cheese sandwiches.

He'd be one of the lunchers himself (except when travelling), so lunch is probably pretty decent. Besides, if it's not good then employees will go and get their own lunch, which would defeat his objective.
