What's your favourite firefox extension?
That's a tough one. I go through phases. Best one at the moment would be greasemonkey I think.![]()
Depends what you do with that though.
The two i use the most are Web Developer (must have for any web devs) and Tab Catalog (kinda like expose for firefox).
Yeah, Web Developer for me, then Firebug
I have to pick just one, that's no fair. *sigh* I suppose if all of my extentions were gone, the one I'd miss the most would be AdBlock Plus.
AdBlocking - what a positive contributor to the world. Defence is sometimes a good offence....![]()
Wha?
Yeah I don't like blocking adds too BUT some of them really have to go away... especially those which play sounds on mouseover and stuff like that. That's silly.
Fine, I see your point. But the
the flashing, noisemaking, zap the monkey and you when an x-box type ads are still going to be blocked...
Seeing as AdBlock just got demoted (but still usefull), I'd have to say All-in-One Sidebar and Answers are my favorites.
I used Stuble Upon a little bit, but then dropped it. Actually, in Mac, the only add-ons I use are delicious and DOM inspector.......
"Download Embedded" is nice, perhaps not the #1 greatest, but if I went down that road I'd just be restating ones that have already been mentioned
It meant I could grab a bunch of flash games to play when I was temporarily disconnected once
Definitely Adblock Plus
Web Developer, then Adblock Plus.
Here's another question: How many FF extentions do you use regularly (or have installed)? 15 for me.
Yea, Web Developer is mad useful. Then maybe IE Tab or Download Statusbar or Mouse Gestures. I have 10 extensions installed I believe, but I disable the ones I don't use regularly so save resources.
NoScript Firefox extension is good
Noscript , delicious extension from Yahoo, web developer, secure password generator , switchproxy , JS Debugger, forecastfox...
i have others loaded too..but those are thee ones I use quite often. NoScript takes care of MOST ads ... and of all other bs scripts people what to shove in your face... if content is good, then it makes sense to me to allow them to have some script access..else...zilch
My favorite is Site Advisor as I signup for almost every other site to check it, it's good to know which site spams and which site has adaware/spyware etc.
i love stumbleupon - great way to while away an hour or so! page rank plugin is usuful too
I love Google Preview which produces little thumbnails next to the google results, Firebug for my developer needs and Permatabs which let you define 3 tabs that are sticky and everytime you open Firefox are there.
Since my top two faves (AdBlock and Web Developer) are already on the list, let me throw in IE Tabs. Some sites still insist on IE (our email at work is all through OWA, and paying some bills online requires IE).
I use Google Browser Sync to sync bookmarks and save browser tabs when switching between computers.
Google Reader Notifier
The only one that I use on a daily basis![]()
In no particular order - the ones I can't live without are:
Web Developer, ColorZilla, Copy As Plain Text, IE View, Lorem Ipsum Generator & Auto Copy.
Copy as Plain Text is a marvellous one - I get so annoyed when all the formatting gets pasted into Word or an Email and this solves the problem instantly. Web Developer is just incredible. Amazing that Chris is still finding new features to add to an already packed extension!
For me its simple:
Web Developer, DOM Inspector, Firebug, FireFTP and Pearl Crescent Page Saver
I use all of them every day
All day
I'm gonna give a try to Google Browser Sync
I'm tired of loosing my bookmarks.
It's awesome
My bookmarks, history, passwords - they follow me everywhere
I bought a notebook![]()
Not a very secure way to store your passwords![]()
"password" isn't particularly hard to guess anyway
rofl
You just make the job easier for the NSA
(with Gg Browser Sync)
When I need that kind of security I use KeyPass.
"Even if you would use all computers in the world to attack
one database, decrypting it would take longer than the age of the universe."
Adblock plus, of course. Flashblock is nice as well. Delicious from yahoo..
all winners
LifeHacker came up with a top ten list
For me add-ons fall into a few categories - stuff that adds completely new functions to the browser, stuff that gives me some extra information and stuff that makes something the browser already does better (e.g. UI changes and other "tweaking")
I have a fair few addons installed.. 24 at last count. If anyone's actually interested I can list them
Please do.... Im using this topic to find out what there is and what I could use!
If you insist
Here they are in alphabetical order (because thats the order that FF lists them in)
British English Dictionary <-- I've been looking for that forever!!
Please do.... Im using this topic to find out what there is and what I could use!
I have about 30 extensions installed on my current browser, and I may have a few more than that on my windows partition. I'll list the ones I haven't seen mentioned yet.
BugMeNot - allows you to bypass compulsory web registration on sites like the NewYorkTimes which makes you register to see certain articles.
Bumble Search - Puts links on search pages to the same search in other engines.
Colorful Tabs - Cosmetic change to tabs, makes them all a different color.
Ctrl Tab Preview - You can Ctrl+Tab through tabs like you Alt+Tab through windows. This gives a preview of the page as you cycle through.
Google Bookmarks Button - lists all your Google Bookmarks
Link Alert - Changes tho cusor to indicate the target of a link. (Javascript, PDF, MP, etc.)
Permit Cookies - let's you set cookie permissions for individual domains. I currently have my browser set up to allow session cookies for all sites, an a select number of sites I trust (like Tangler
) have their cookies saved across sessions.
Searchbar Autosizer - Set your searchbar width or allow it to expand based on query length.
Stop-or-Reload Button - Combines the stop and reload buttons into one button. (this really should be default behavior IMHO)
Stylish - like previously mentioned Greasemonkey but for CSS instead of Javascript
TrashMail.net - creates a disposable email address for when you want to try something but don't want to give away your real email address.
Viamatic foXpose - click a button to see all your thumbnails of all your tabs in a new tab, and jump right to one by clicking on it.
I'd also like to mention YubNub it's not an extension but it can go in your searchbar. What it is is a command line for the web. Definitely worth checking out.
Google Reader notifier!
Stop-or-Reload Button - Combines the stop and reload buttons into one button. (this really should be default behavior IMHO)
Why?.. I use those 2 buttons for 2 different things - occasionally a page is loading and I don't want it to be, or I want it to stop loading something within the page because its slow and I'm not interested, if clicking stop then also reloaded the page then I would have no way to just tell it to stop loading
Sorry, that was a bad decription on my part.
Stop-or-Reload button combines the two buttons into one space and displays one or the other based on what the page is doing. While a page is loading the stop button appears. When the page has stoped loading the reload button appears.
ohhh.. ok
still, I think I'd prefer my buttons to hold still
I don't use so many extensions only about 56...lol
I would like an extenti for temporary bookmarks, or a place to store tabs temporary, offen i find myself opening a lot of tabs that i want to read at some point in the future, but maybe not right now, I could store them as bookmarks but I will only use them once so that don't seen so nice. So I would like something inbetween tabs and bookmarks. like a bookmark that dissapers after you have clicked on it...
I use adblock, download statusbar, video downloader and downthemall.
Down them all is probably the most useful
I've got so many I've almost lost track of what does what![]()
But just downloaded a new one today http://mycroft.mozdev.org/download.html?name=yubnub&sherlock=yes&submitform=Search
This adds a "search for YubNub" to your drop down box of search engines in Firefox... it acts as a "Web command line" at first blush there looks to be perhaps thousands of "canned command lines" available, plus you can write your own ..... an example of its usage would be:
gmails tangler (typed into the search box) which:
Stumble Upon and Firebug does it for me,the only reason i occasionally use FF is because of these, otherwise i have Opera as default browser.
My favorite extensions overall have to be Adblock Plus and Google Browser Sync.
@tegel, You might like PermaTabs. You can mark a tab as permanant and it stays between sessions until you unmark it.
I have 42 extensions.
My favorite extension by leaps and bounds in the newest del.icio.us extension. I also have a widescreen monitor, so it's easy to keep my search panel docked as a sidebar at all times. between text and tag searching, I can find almost anything in an instant.
Listing them in order as Fx (that's what Firefox recommends as its short-form
)
I like gTranslate - I'm keep being sent to Zurich for work and my German vocab is not brilliant. If you highlight a word or phrase and right click, the google translation turns up in the menu. It's quick which is why its so handy.
I also use Adblock Plus and the del.icio.us plugin.
add firebug and cssviewer to my list![]()
scrapbook! colorzilla, chromatabs, password exporter
Please do.... Im using this topic to find out what there is and what I could use!
Ditto! It's like I have a new recipe full of 'foreign' ingredients and I am trying to find out what I need and what they contribute. ![]()
I have discovered many fine extensions from seeing others' lists. So here's mine:
SessionSaver and All-in-One Gestures are essential to me. Since I talk to people in different countries, Foxclocks is very useful. COlourful Tabs is very nice too.
All in one Gestures, waste of energy... I just use hotkeys.
My extensions:
IE Tab is noce, not only for development; there have been times when some form written for IE wouldn't behave correctly in FF. Nice not having to drag out the plain, vanilla IE
noce->nice
Casey - how did you get on with CoComment? I found it slowed down my browsing so much I had to uninstall it.
Yeah, I actually have it disabled. I don't even use it that much.
How does CoComment compare with Tangler?
They're completely different, Minhster. CoComment allows you to keep track of comments you've made on forums, message boards etc. It looks like a good idea in principle, but I found it really slowed down general browsing with the extensions, so I don't tend to use it.
Apart from the obvious performance issues, do you see anything else bad with CoComment? I was under the impression CoComment was also about groups and discussion as well, I must admit though I haven't used it myself, just saw video demos on it.
No, nothing else bad about it. I think you can join groups with related material, but I never got that far due to the performance issues. Unfortunately, for me, it doesn't matter how good it is - if it's a performance killer it gets deleted as, to me, that indicates some bad coding.
coComment is actually working on making groups and stuff like that. The beta version is actually quite similar to Tangler. Thats the reason i decided to stop using it.
Yslow, an extension to Firebug, analyses web pages and tells you why they are slow.
Ouch, this page gets an F (36).
Does it say why?
The page is too heavy (+700ko)
the avatars are not resized, there is almost 400 ko of avatars on this page!
I guess tangler should use something like the PHP GD library when avatar are uploaded![]()
those 400ko should be reduce to 40ko
the other problem is the javascript
300 ko of js files
using js compressor like http://dean.edwards.name/packer/ or http://www.crockford.com/javascript/jsmin.html tangler could probably save another 100 or 200 ko
to improve server perfomance it could be good to pack all pictures (all except avatars) into one and use css for display. Then it's only one http request to get the pic instead of one per pic. Less http requests equals happier servers![]()
that's what google does btw
That's some productive feedback for Tangler!
And i just noticed the comment field is adjustable now, nice work guys
With this new version things are a little bit better, this page is now 680ko
and scores a F still but 51 (was 36 before).
There are many extensions to choose out there.. but I will list the extensions I use the MOST:
1. StumbleUpon (i cannot live without it)
2. ScreenGrab
3. Ctrl Tab Preview
4. Greasemonkey/Stylish (they are awesome...)
5. Thumbnail Strip (I stumbled upon on many sites, sometimes I get lost, so I want to find that site ... Thumbnail Strip helps a lot)
6. WOT
7. Dictionary Tooltip (It help me spell better.
)
8. My Ma.gnolia
9. Facebook Toolbar (it is a great facebook notification)
10. Cooliris Preview (it is nice when you want to just look at them quickly)
11. Print Hint (it is great tool when you want to save the ink and just want to print text only and align better for printing)
deantobias, thanks for the tip about the ScreenGrab extension. That's useful.
I use the Google Toolbar both for Search Marketing work and I like their AutoFill.
I also like the ColorfulTabs to make my tabbed browsing more enjoyable.![]()
What does screengrab do?
(and please don't say 'grabs your screen')
We now have a group dedicated to Firefox
Yo D. It enables you to do a "screen capture" ie turn what is on your screen into a graphic, a flat image that you can then use to email, or incorporate into a presentation, a web page, upload to flickr, turn into a work of art, or whatever. Capice?
Okay.... but what's the difference between that and taking a regular screenshot?
Not much. It's just built into the browser, and I guess most importantly, you can do the whole web page (even if you would need to scroll which other screen grabs don't "see")
Oh!!! Now that's what I've been looking for!![]()
Thanks for your patient explanation jon! I'll go get that for myself
I can't live without Web Developer, Firebug, Greasemonkey, DOM Inspector, ColorZilla, Measureit, Adblock Plus, Stop AutoPlay, StumbleUpon, Del.icio.us and.... coComment FF add-ons!
FoxyTunes and ForecastFox
Oooooh is there a FoxyTunes?
Yes, it's very nice and now will inject what tune you're listening to as a gmail sig, if you like that sort of thing.
Eh?![]()

Oh cool!
Thanks for that. I might find it useful.![]()
It's not just Gmail you know.
There's also Facebook messages, Hotmail, FlickrMail (I think), you name it!
Oh!
That is pretty cool!
Greasemonkey and Adblock for me.
I like adblock plus + filterset updater, colorful tabs, del.ici.ous bookmarks, fasterfox and stumble upon.![]()
What Waynewill1 said.
Shessh, this hasn't had any replies in a long time.
I have loads of favorite extensions but here's a couple of must haves..for me anyways!
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/190?id=190
http://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/46
*For some reason the toolbar is adding the http twice so the first links didn't work
Here's a link that has loads of useful extensions
200+ extremely useful firefox extensions that save time and effort
http://www.econsultant.com/i-want-firefox-extension/index.html
It says page doesn't exist![]()
What do they do?
After I reformatted my comp a little while ago, I stopped adding extensions. FF gets so bogged down.
Right now all I have are better Gmail and Google notebook
I have 23 extensions but all of them are useful.. if I could slim it down without losing the uses they offer then I would, but I can't, so I won't.
I'll wait for FF to get turbo charged before I go for anymore
They are always working on the memory footprint.. shouldn't be too long before it's nimble like a fox ![]()
Gosh I hope so
Thanks for the links techchick!
Sending ...
