If your writing group is looking for new members, or you're looking to join one, post your information here!
A well-established writers' group seeks one new member. We meet in a pub in Cambridge on Monday evenings in the summer and every Tuesday evening in the winter. You can find examples of our members' work here, here, and here. This is a prose-focused group. We are looking for a serious prose writer (preferably fiction, although we will consider non-fiction) who loves cheese fries, has a good sense of humor, and has the ability and proclivity to carefully read, edit and constructively criticize the work of other writers. Please email ClarkamyL at gmail dot com with a short introduction and a writing sample if you would like to join us.
I'm hoping to find or start a writer's group on the south shore, preferably meeting on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. I am interested in non-fiction, but that's not a deal breaker. I'm also interested in learning how to go about finding interviewees to answer some questions for research that I'm doing on a particular subject. Any clues?
Thanks!
Karyn
Karyn,
Karyn, I am on the South Shore and a beginner writer who might be interested, but Saturday and Sunday afternoons couldn't be a worse time as we are away on many weekends. Have you considered Sunday or Monday evenings? Just a thought. Ellen
Hi Karyn and Ellen, I also live on the South Shore and am looking for a writer's group, non-fiction and fiction. Weekends are not great for me either, but could do a weekday evening. Thanks, Michelle
Hi Michelle and Ellen-
I just seem to be tired from working all day, and I teach at night occasionally - I always seem to find myself with nothing to do on either Saturday or Sunday afternoon. The one night that seems to work out for me is Monday. I'm in Hingham - perhaps we could meet at a book store close to everyone?
I'm Mimz, live in Lex. and very anxious to get into a writing group. I teach Creative Memoir in senior programs and adult ed centers and have been at it for seven years. I'm available most evenings during the week. (I, too, am a senior!)
Hi South Shore writers,
Oops! Hi again South Shore writers. I live in Plymouth - write fiction - am working on a novel and would like to find a writing group. I'm not crazy about weekends as I am retired and, like Ellen, often travel then, but a weekday or night could work.
Please keep me in the loop for the south shore writers group. I live in Plympton, meeting at a bookstore sounds like a good idea.
Michelle
Any CT members?
I know there are probably not many, but if you live in CT or RI (near CT) I would love to get involved in a group. I live in Deep River and primarily write nonfiction (essays). Dabbling in poetry recently....

I'm looking to join or start a writer's group in Boston, Cambridge or (preferably) Salem. Can anyone help me?
-Matt
Hi South Shore writers,
I am in Hingham, and would be very interested in a writing group. Weekends are good for me. Right now the only weeknight I could do is Friday, which I doubt would be a popular option. My schedule will open up eventually, so please do keep me in the loop.
Best,
Justine
Hello So Shore Writers -- I'd be very intereste in a writers group. I'm a Hingham-based fiction writer and I used to be part of a writers group that met weekly at the HPL. Loved it but we sort of drifted apart after a year or so. Weeknights work best for me, but I can be persuaed to do weekends.
heers,C
Um, that was supposed to read "Cheers, Chris" Thank you for your indulgence.
Hello, I used to be in the HPL writers group too; I'm now with a dynamic group in Natick - meets Monday nights - anyone interested? Chris N - Hi - you might like it
What and where is HPL?
Hingham Public Library
Hi, Jane--
Do you mind sharing the stats on the Natick group? (time, place, etc.) How many new members, exactly, are you open to?
It's Ellen again. I am in Bridgewater, so the Hingham, Plymouth Area people aren't that far from me. Let me know what you decide to do with a group--it sounds like there will be enough interest eventually.
Hi KJ,
The group is fiction only, novelists only, though some bring in short stories at times. Monday nights, at the Leonard Morse Public Library. There's about six of us.
We're really only looking for one new person. Are you interested? Maybe we should talk offline.
Jane
Hey Jane -- Great to hear from you! Natick sounds like a great group, and thanls for the tip, but it's too much of a haul for me right now.
OK - I propose a writers group to meet at the Hingham Public Library, Saturday afternoons at 3 p.m. Any takers?
I'm looking for a group that will allow me to swap critiques for large pieces of work (novel drafts, for example), as opposed to ten pages every two weeks, which is what most groups seem to do (how can people ever get done at that rate?). Also, I'd like to swap critiques for queries and proposals. Is that what you do? If not, do you know of any individuals who would like to work with me?
Anyone NORTH of Boston interested in starting a group, ideally fiction, w/ a serious intent to publish?
karynd -- I'd be up for the HPL group on Saturday afternoons, if we can get a few more folks. I'm stalled on a second novel draft and enjoyed the enforced discipline a group comittment demands. You thinking weekly, biweekly or monthly? May depend on what the library has available in terms of rooms.
Anyone out there interested in forming a poetry support/critique group in Greater Boston?
Carence,
I'd be interested. Where are you located? What kind of material do you write?
Hi kjfree,
I'd definitely be interested in forming a poetry group. Where are you located?
MCasey-
MCasey-
Hi, Leora!
I'm in West Roxbury--semi-T accessible, but open to Cambridge, etc as well...
Hi MCasey - I'm in Andover and am more than halfway through a series of linked short stories (fiction). How about you?
carence I'm in Salem, and write a lot of genre short fiction.
The South Shore momentum seems to have died, so I'll throw it out again. Any fiction writers down here who'd like to get together on a regular (though maybe not weekly) basis. We can worry about locale later...let's just see if we can get a handful of people motivated to get together first.
Cheers,
Chris
Chris,
I may be reinventing the wheel here, as I'm new to this, but I could definitely join a Boston-based group; South Shore is a tricky commute for me.
Best,
Bruce
I'm from Brockton and not averse to getting together with some other writers. I'm a little weird on meeting people through the net, though. Haha.
Bruce -- Agreed. If I can't get critical mass down here, maybe I'll look north and create a better excuse for charging into the city more often.
chrisn, karynd, escopa80, mwa (& any other So. Shore person) just got back from Nantucket, but am still interested. It seems we have enough So Shore interest to at least meet and explore whether we're all on the same page as far as what we want/expect from a book group. How about meeting next Saturday or a Monday night?
I still can't do Saturdays, but would meet on a Monday if you can find an appropriate place.
Bookworm -- good idea to rally the troops and see what we all want...and I'm on vacation until 8/18. Doh! End of August?
I am interested in a poetry workshop group and live in Roslindale.
Hi, Lee Jay! I'm a West Rox poet...There seems to be some kind of a poetry reading series at Emack and Bolio's in Rozzie--I haven't made it over yet. I wonder if they'd be conducive to a group meeting there as well? I'd love to meet on a weekly basis...
kjfree, I am interested in meeting also. I didn't know about the Emack and Bolio's reading series. Perhaps we could meet for coffee/tea to chat about possibilities. If there is anyone else interested in a regular poetry meeting, that would be good too. Leora? Other? I can go further afield than this part of Boston. I am away until the 19th, but am somewhat flexible after that. Some evenings, Mondays and Tuesdays during the day too. I prefer weekdays rather than week-end.
Hi Everyone,
I run an alternative writer's group and writer's program (called The Writing Practice) focused on developing your writing process so your writing motivation is solid and less encumbered by procrastination, pessimism. self criticism and other expressions of writer's block. Group members write, discuss issues, and challenge myths and misbeliefs about writing. They develop greater strength and clarity that helps them maintain momentum and morale.
The group meets every other Tuesday from 8-9:30pm and at my office one mile north of Porter square in Cambridge. If you would like to learn more, send an e-mail to me, Marcia Weiss at mew@collaborativepsychotherapiy.com and please visit my website: http://www.collaborativepsychotherapy.com
Helping writers emerge from writing blocks is a specialty of mine. I am a psychotherapist and writer (who used to teach a writing block class at Grub. I have also taught at Tufts University and this fall on Columbus Day Weekend, I will teach "Creating the Conditions for Flow": at Castle Hill Center for the Arts in Truro, Mass. I'm in Newton and like the idea of fiction groups
Hi, Lee Jay--
Weekeday evenings work bestfor me too--I'm pretty flexible after 6:30...
Any other JP/Rozzie/West Rox poets out there? I'm also happy to host in my house...You can e-mail me at kfriedland@rcn.com (apologies for all these typos! I AM a writer!)
Any Friday Night writers out there? Meet someplace in the 7-10pm window. Write a bit then go out afterwards? I'm also looking for potential collaborators but I started a different thread about that.
I live on Cape Cod. I'm looking for a writer's group on Cape Cod or southeastern MA--Plymouth, Dartmouth, New Bedford... I'm a fiction writer with an MFA. Email me at bswrite@verizon.net Thanks.
I attend a Writer's Group at Barnes & Noble in Walpole on Tuesday at 7:00 P.M. It's not very structured but the group gives great advice.
We bring ten copies of four pages of writing. As we read our own, the other people edit and mark the copies. Then we discuss. If you can take the free for all, drop by. New members are welcome, as are all genres. Closed minds are not.
Hi, Django--where were you looking to meet up on Fridays? Any and all genres?

TO ALL OF YOU INTERESTED IN A SOUTH SHORE FICTION WRITERS GROUP,
TO ALL OF YOU INTERESTED IN A SOUTH SHORE FICTION WRITERS GROUP...Now that I accidentally have your attention....if enough people are willing to commit, I will reserve a room at the Plymouth library off Exit 5, Rte 3 to discuss organizing a regular group. Monday nights or Sunday afternoons seemed to be the two preferences mentioned earlier. Email me if interested with your first available date(s). patcotta@comcast.net.
Hi kjfree. Sorry for the slow reply. I live in Waltham but will gladly travel into Boston, Cambridge or Newton for a group. All genres except horror.
Hi all...I 'm new to this...but very excited about it. I'd love to find a writer's group--I'm in East Bridgewater...so anywhere on the South Shore...to Plymouth would work. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!
Hello, mcasey and carence,
I'm in Tyngsborough and have been writing fiction for too many years to count (just because I am too lazy at the moment). I have published a short story in On The Water magazine and one to appear in Gray's Sporting Journal. I am currently active in one local, small writers' group, but am looking for something a bit more serious.
Currently, I am working on a collection of short fiction as well as a novel -- not genre, call it literary fiction, for lack of a more precise and less unctuous term. Also, I know of at least one other very serious writer, and good friend of mine, who might come along. He writes genre pieces which are very good, and is at work on a novel as well.
Hi JaneInDaHouse,
I saw your posting about the Monday evening group at the Natick library. Can you tell me more about the group (style of writing, volume/productivity), and whether there's still space for one more? I am eager for a group to help me get my finished novel (mainstream/literary) to the next level -- I take seriously commitment to a group, and give very thoughtful/thorough feedback... Thanks! nichole@nbernier.com
I submitted a couple of short stories to the literary journals and have a novel in process and would like to meet with other serious writers to socialize and discuss our work. I live in Medford.
Is interest in a South Shore group dead? I received only 1 reply to my offer to book the Plymouth library for an exploratory meeting. Pat
Pat, I am interested in talking about a group. I believe I was the one who responded way back when. Thanks, Michelle
I live in the South Shore and I would be interested in talking about writing group. I heard there is already a Plymouth group. Does that mean you have already formed it and I am far behind the curve?
I too am looking for a writers group on the south shore HPL on a weekday evening is best. Thanks Mark
Please check out under Topics - Living in New Plymouth - I have placed my request there before I discovered this page. Thanks - Miriam
I also just realised that I should have said New Plymouth - New Zealand - Love to all who can see the funny side - Miriam ![]()
