Very, very annoying bug.  I do not think it was deliberate and I would not know how one would even cause the bug to appear.  However, I was winning a game against a player named "adamv" on the map "One on One."  It was apparent I had won the game several turns back but he would not surrender as typical as most players did.  I really didn't think much about it and slowly continued to capture the rest of his bases until this morning.

I wake up and see the game as ended with me victorious.  However, I have gained no points and he had gained no points.  I enter the game and see that he has cleared the entire map taking all my bases and killing all my own units.  He says " should have taken peace, weird game bug is letting me play over and over again."  Luckily the game ended without loss of points.

Now I understand that the bug most likely was not deliberately done by him (though how lucky for him and how it happens just when he needs it), but to purposely exploit it and use it seems wrong.  Adamv apparently lacks the morals and honor of knowing right from wrong.  I feel he should have surrendered seeing that we was defeated.

To be honest, this bug has really ruined my joy over the game.  I figure I'll take a break from playing a bit to cool down.  I have a hard time accepting someone cheating.  Only worse when I'm separated by my computer and I can not confront him about it.  /sigh

Overall, be aware of this bug and hopefully in time it can be eliminated.  Second, be careful of the player "adamv."

If everything happened as you say, then I agree that his behaviour was rather unethical.  I note that he's not a WWPA member, though. :)

Yeah, I noticed the same.  Honestly, I did not give much credit to being a WWPA member until now.  Since this incident, I have signed up to be a WWPA member myself and hope to play WWPA members.  There is something to say about playing ethical and honorable players.

Hahaahaa, thats what I call a comeback:)   I can imagine what you felt when you looked at the screen that morning.

But guys, its a game after all. dont take it THAT serious.

This happened to me as well, the other player just vanished out of the game with no point-loss. After a while I just decided to see what happens if I clear out the rest (I was really winning and it took me only 3 turns to do so) but when it was done, I gained no points.

Your situation was different as it was you that was winning, but you cant call this a cheat though. that game was screwed anyway. In this case he cant even surrender, as that button is not available anymore. You can only "Leave Game"

Hey Streen, check your private conversation. I basically had no idea the game was broken

    Sorry!

    2007-09-25 04:02:38.0

Streen: I disagree.  The most honourable thing to do would have been not to take one's turn and to chat about it with your opponent, and to report the bug(s) here in the forums.  But to abuse a bug to weasel out of a clear loss is pretty contemptible.  I can't respect such a player.

I had that bug once but it was early in the game and my opponent agreed to restart. Forgot his name, but that was cool.

I can't imagine what it would be though if it happened on turn 25 during a 4 players game on Badlands after having played for like 10 days

Ethics aside (not ignoring  - just not addressing right now), this is a nasty bug we thought we had gotten rid off already. But it is obviously very much alive and kicking:( Really sorry for this as it affects the game in such a drastic way. I do not think it can be purposefully triggered by any player (if it can please do let us know asap as it would really help us) but once it occurs there is little the affected player can do ... We are investigating!

Alex, since it's all web-based, I guess there's nothing we can send you - except for the game ID. You can then look in the file.

I guess guys one thing we could do is just as the bug happens in your game you suspend everything and post here so that Alex can look at the log just as the bug happens... Might reveal different things then say 5 turns after the bug happens.

    > I can't respect such a player.

but there is nothing that can be done, its either quitt and delete the game or spending some time  killing off units that belong to NOBODY. I fail to see where the honor is in waiting and doing nothing. Nothing is lost or gained on either side if the guy thats still left has some fun.

    2007-09-26 04:31:52.0

Streen: The point is he was trying to abuse the bug to WIN and GAIN POINTS, not just "for nothing".  Was that unclear?  And the honour isn't it "doing nothing" the honour is in dialoguing about the problem, reporting it, etc.

    2007-09-26 04:36:04.0

or honor the status of a game which you are losing and click yee ol' surrender.

    2007-09-26 10:16:24.0

I like to surrender once I know I've lost, but a lot of people don't like that.... so I tend to ask. Easier that way

The ID number and link for the game is http://weewar.com/game/27645.

If you watch the replay, you can clearly see my units (blue) advancing across the game and almost winning the entire match when he all of a sudden can take multiple turns.

What I meant is that as soon as the bug happens, as soon as one guy is out of the game, the remaining player cannot even surrender, as he is allone in this game. the only option he has is to abandon it himself as well. This is AFTER the bug.

I am not refering to those that are unwilling to admit defeat and give up even though there is no way on earth that they could possibly defeat you anymore. I find that annoying as well. wasting time just to finish off their last units. (one mate at work here also strictly refuses to surrender)

    2007-09-28 07:13:35.0

Although I myself surrender when I think that I have no chance of coming back, I think people are well within their rights to let the game drag to the very end.  We might consider it slightly impolite, though. :)  Perhaps a small incentive should be granted for those that surrender, such as a tiny reduction in point loss.

For example, if the game would give +8 to the winner and -8 to the loser, perhaps we could make it +8 and -7 if the guy surrenders instead.

This would end games sooner than they otherwise would with these "stubborn":) players and it has the added benefit of freeing up server resources sooner, as well (since game activity stresses the server(s) more than an ended game).
