Now that we can edit and create our own maps, along with having fun creating and playing these new maps, I think we should edit the old existing maps for balance and submit them to the devs to replace or add on to the existing set as soon as possible. A good handful of the original maps were pretty good, if not for a few balance issues, namely Fortress for me. Here's my version of Fortress revised: http://battleground2.weewar.com/map/19893 (edit: it won't generate the preview! Cry ). I simply added a water tile at (6,1) so that blue is no longer guaranteed to get the three NW bases if played right (haven't tested it yet though). Other suggestions welcome.

Aruba and Tai Chi could use a tiny bit of tweaking to eliminate guaranteed blue win. Perfectly or nearly symmetrical maps like Badlands could use a small tweak also. In Workday Carnage, purple has an extra H tank in place of a raider. I saw that madmike revised Lakes and LuckyMustard is working on North America, which are cool too. Smile

Yeah it won't preview normally if it's not publishd, you could copy the map to view it, that's what I did for my LOTR Middle earh map.

I think some maps are kinda off and yeah fortress kinda is one of them.

I revised Aruba: http://battleground2.weewar.com/map/19899 (changed red mountain to tree, moved blue starting trooper)

I also revised Workday Carnage and got this messed up thing: http://battleground2.weewar.com/map/19901 . All I did was copy the map, replaced purple H tank with raider, changed the name, then went to my headquarters, looked at "Your Maps", saw that it wasn't there, navigated back a few times in my browser, and ended up seeing that page. Messed up preview, it's not in my maps tab, and my name is not noted as map creator.

"LuckyMustard is working on North America" no i'm not...;)  what you may be referring to is that i found someone else doing a more zoomed in canada map and posted it in the other active thread - real world maps.  that's a good idea though, because when i first did north america, the devs decided where the pre-captured bases and starting units went.  many of the first players pointed out that there were issues and i agreed.  after playing a couple times, especially as blue as i was the one starting the game usually, i would've like to change it but didn't want to put in the effort of recreating the map, since the way it used to get published it wiped it out of storage.  now that's fixed i'd be glad to go back and for the actual first time, place the units myself.

spadequack, i just saw the north america map that you must be referring to.  crazy stuff going on in my map storage... it's like others can affect what's in my storage. :(

I see that Lakes 2.0 has made it into the standard map set replacing the old Lakes. Old tragic triangle is also gone. And Fortress (prev. map 19) has its income info fixed and is now map 1746. But what happened to Badlands (formerly map 20)?! It's gone!

Narrow Path (Map 1745) is also not on the standard set any longer.

Tai Chi and Spiral are also gone.

    2008-03-12 10:04:17.0

    This is a great idea.

Some of the default maps are still missing the attribution to the original creator. But we will fill it in where clear and possible.

Spirals for example was one of mine and it was created way back in order to demonstrate a large map. I was always rather embarrassed by it. So we finally removed it.

Old tragic triangle was nothing but a remnant, because there is a new version already and the old one was really not playable (balance wise).

In general we are planing to add / replace / update some more maps yet and make custom maps easier to find. The previous editor and before that the direct XML editing, both did not allow testing without adding it to the default list first. Now that we can, we want to make the line up a lot better. This does include updates where the original creator provides one as well as any suggestion you guys might have.

The one we are already preparing for an update is Dead Meadows. Should be out soon.

But we are really looking forward to adding new maps and maybe even automating that process.

Sounds great! I was just kinda confused when maps disappeared and stuff - thought it was a bug. You guys should post a changelog or something so that we know what was supposed to happen in an update and can better point out oddities.

I added a map building best practices page on the wiki.  Map Building Best Practices

I've put in a few points that were near the surface of my brain.  Sorry for the cruddy typing.:)

5 or 6 Player Maps: "Start the players off with some captured bases and some basic equipment. It's important that action can start quickly."

A very good point. Makes no effort for the map builder and saves a lot of turns

Hey Winter - I didn't know you were the one who started that page. I just saw an empty page, so I put some content in according to the title. If any of the points I wrote make sense, could you incorporate them?

    2008-03-12 18:44:33.0

uh oh, the content went away?

    2008-03-12 18:46:22.0

I don't see your edits bonchon

    2008-03-12 18:50:40.0

Oh, yeah - sorry, it's in an earlier edit, you can still see them by looking at History. I'll put them in and you see what you think

    2008-03-12 18:52:48.0

    Ok, I've put them back
