During this season of plunging temperatures and equally plunging finances, our colleagues at the Elderly Commission have signed up for the task of calling every senior in the City of Boston to let them know about essential services available through The City of Boston. This is a heroic, critical task for an at-risk demographic. Recent articles in local and national newspapers have focused on the plight of seniors caught short of shelter, heat, and food in a down economy. Here is our chance to do something about it.

In support of our partners at City Hall, the Grub Street Memoir Project has signed up to make calls on Wednesday, March 11 from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Tula Mahl from the Commission has provided details, and I am copying them below. I hope you will consider joining us on 3/11, even if you can only show up for part of the session. Our ongoing collaboration with The City of Boston has been an essential factor in the success of the the Memoir Project. So let's roll up our sleeves and help take some names off the list.

If you can think of others who might be willing to help, please forward this message to them. In the mean time, best wishes to all, and stay warm!

    Phonebank Details:
    Please arrive by 5:00pm
Please enter through 1st floor entrance, facing Faneuill Hall, Congress
    Street
Go to room 816A (8th floor)
No need to bring anything. Maybe a bottled water to keep  your throat
wet.  But snacks and drinks will be provided.
Phone bank ends promptly at 8:00pm

A quick orientation session will be held. Then everyone will be set up
with a phone.  An Elderly Commission Staff member will be on hand for
    any additional questions.

  • What are you reading?

I just started Penelope Lively's _Consequences_, which so far is a good book with a bad title.  Has anyone read it?

  • What did you think of Muse 2008?

I also wanted to mention how great Bret Anthony Johnston's sessions always are.  2008 was his second time at the Muse, and in both years I left his talk feeling inspired, energized, and amazed at his warmth, humor and intelligence.  I'm sure he'll be back next year, so don't miss it!  Hopefully we can also talk him into doing a "Muse Reprise" seminar at Grub (a 3-hour version of the Muse session) sometime in the fall.
