  • Hubpages? Other Online Sites for revenue?

I did an experiement this year and wrote my first 10 articles for Suite 101. Granted, I could probably be more skilled with keywords and perhaps choose more topics that appeal to the masses. But I have studied the tutorials and have tried to be farily savvy that way.

So far, I have made 3 dollars since January. I read some Web sites that say the effect is cumulative and slow to start; after 3 or 6 months you can have a regular income stream. One writer estimated that she made a dollar per article per month, so I thought maybe this could at least pay my Web hosting fees! And this particular writer pointed out that some editors had found her via her articles...so there could be that advantage.

I'm going to hang on a while longer. It hasn't been fruitless--I actually enjoy writing the articles and it confirmed for me that I can write something decent on nearly any topic. I also have noticed some contributors write a lot shorter pieces and seem to put less effort in, based on the final product--can't seem to let go and just churn out fast but not too helpful pieces. Mostly I feel I could be making a lot more for the time and effort; perhaps channel that same energy into better querying and marketing my work.

Must say Suite 101 makes the experience feel pleasant and is very user friendly. To me it has a community feeling. I am sure for some it may be a decent income generator. But not for me, not so far anyway!

  • any other serious but geogaphically isolated writers out there?

Hi, "Mermaid". Your message caught my eye--I live in Deep River! Not too many Grub Street members on the CT shoreline, I don't write fiction, not yet anyway. Nonfiction and poetry. I also have experience editing. I am working on a book right now that a publisher in the UK is interested in. Here's my home e-mail:khauswirth@sbcglobal.net. Please drop me a line if you'd like.

  • Anyone interested in nature writing and other forms of essay?

Just us chickens, Daniel. I think the best way is e-mail. Do you want to send me something first? khauswirth@sbcglobal.net. Please let me know the sort of feedback you are looking for--just overall impressions, or more in depth (ie, tracked changes in Word with any suggested corrections/rewords).

    Thanks,

    K

  • Book blurbing

I have had great luck with writing to authors with whom I feel a link and striking up an online acquaintance. For my recent book proposal, I reached out for several early endorsements, which read just like book blurbs. One was from an editor I knew pretty well, one was from an author I knew only moderately well from online correspondence, and one was from a stranger. I was delighted to find they were willing to look at a synopsis (or in one case, a proposal) and write something up. I think many authors are flattered to be asked, and it also helps build their own name (assuming what they endorse is a good read)! Of course, this might not apply to some really, really, big names who must get asked many times every day!

  • Seeking someone to swap critiques

I might be interested. Sounds like you write nonfiction?

I only have one book proposal under my belt; have written a lot of queries for articles.

  • Looking for a Writer's Group?

    Any CT members?

I know there are probably not many, but if you live in CT or RI (near CT) I would love to get involved in a group. I live in Deep River and primarily write nonfiction (essays). Dabbling in poetry recently....
