  • writer's block

I think I might have a third type of writer's block to offer. Although similar to the first type of writer's block mcasey described, I think it's a bit harder to overcome. Lately I have had more than enough ideas floating around my head, and I'm sure if they were given a chance they would come together all on their own. My newfound "writer's block" seems to be more of an avoidance, a calculated block. If I have writer's block and do not take the time and effort to put my ideas to paper than I am avoiding any risk of failure or falling short. I think many writers have anxiety about stories and poems coming out differently than they envisioned them in their heads. Perhaps sometimes we create our own writer's block from time to time because it is easier than writing. Writer's block can almost become an excuse.

As far as any solutions to this sort of blockage, I once had a professor tell me that she told all her friends she was writing her novel so every time she ran into someone they would ask how her novel was going and she would be embarrassed or shamed into finishing it. Tongue out
