  • Looking for a Writer's Group?

I'm from Brockton and not averse to getting together with some other writers. I'm a little weird on meeting people through the net, though. Haha.

  • writer's block

When I hit a stumbling block, I put on a certain playlist, stop writing, and just close my eyes. I have a few "writing" playlists. One includes mellow, cerebral stuff like Autumn Tears, Dead Can Dance, Delerium, some instrumental stuff from Devin Townsend, Erik Norlander, Epica, basically music that just lulls me into a sort of dream state. Sounds cheesy, I know, but it gets my mind working again.

Then sometimes I listen to people like Ani Difranco, Emilie Autumn, John Butler Trio, Charlotte Martin, and others like that, artists that make me focus on words and meanings, lyrics that say something with a bit more depth than most. This can also jolt the brain back onto its track; you hear a word, or are hit with a random image, and it can all come right back into focus.

Progressive rock/metal helps sometimes, too. For the same reason the mellow stuff lulls me into a state where my mind just wanders around sorting through things, progressive music's complex time changes and such seem to do the same thing. Either way, music is generally playing non-stop while I'm writing. Silence puts me to sleep.
