Scraping the pennies actually works.... (hello, cash sitting in my pocket), so I understand completely.

Second run theaters are always an option too and considering how quickly movies cycle out of theaters, you'd only have to wait about a month for it to end up in a second run theater where the prices average $5.Laughing

  • Eugenie Markham / Dark Swan Series by Richelle Mead (spoilers)

I appreciate some of the finer points Gabi enjoyed -- especially Dorian's evolution. However, I'm with Steph on the bottom line that Eugenie's final decision, to deliberately keep the children from Dorian even though she knew what it would mean to him and also that it was the opposite of everything she was suppossed to achieve in personal growth was the ultimate betrayal.... not just because it was a secret but more so because she made a major decision about the future of their kingdoms and their people without giving him a chance to weigh-in -- and Eugenie knew this was wrong when she made the choice which is why she rationalizes it with the whole "even safer option" which is complete and utter crap because it's just a rationalization for a betrayal. The way Mead wrote the book with the focus on sharing, trust and working with another person to make decisions just reinforces how tremendous Eugenie's betrayal of Dorian and all of the ideals was.... at least that's how I read it.

  • 2011 Releases : Your Happy Surprises & Unexpected Disappointments

Gabi, the Elle Jasper books sounds like it could be really entertaining... I might check it out for fun (even if it's not suppossed to be).

One of the reasons I got sucked into Spartacus on Starz was because we dubbed it Full Frontal Friday Nights! The series is complete popcorn camp and I love it for being exactly what it's suppossed to be, an over the top flesh fest with blood, guts and swords. It's a fun show.

  • Other Book Recommendations 2 **NEW THREAD**

Thanks for the head's-up about holding off, I was interested in this series because I really liked White Trash Zombie (GREAT reccomendation by the way), and I think I'll probably like this one as well (love the cover), but based on your review, I think I'd be happier waiting for the author to get a little further along with the series. Speaking of getting along, any news on an addition to Jesse Petersen's entertaining Living With The Dead series? This one has really grown on me and I'd love to read more... the books are fun.

  • 2011 Releases - Your Top 10 Urban Fantasy, Paranormal and Paranormal Romances for 2011

I loved Magic Slays, it's the book that locked the series as one of my favorites. Glad to know other people enjoyed it as much as I did.

  • 2011 Releases - Your Top 10 Science Fiction, Fantasy and Dystopian Releases

My favorite 2011 releases in Science Fiction, Fantasy, Zombies and Dystopian are actually some of the best books I've read in a long time.

    1. The Postmortal: A Novel by Drew Magary (Sci-Fy/Dystopian)
    2. Germline by T.C. McCarthy (Sci-Fy/Dystopian)
    3. Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion (Zombie Romance)
    4. A Dance With Dragons by George R.R. Martin (Fantasy)
    5. The Heroes by Joe Abercrombie (Fantasy)
    6. My Life As A White Trash Zombie by Diana Rowland (Zombie)
    7. The Revisionists by Thomas Mullen (Sci-Fy/Time Travel/Thriller)
    8. Forbidden by Ted Dekker (Dystopian/Fantasy)
    9. The Wise Man's Fear by Patrick Rothfuss (Fantasy)
    10. Deadline by Mira Grant (Zombie/Sci-Fy)

I strongly reccomend my top three picks, all of which were written by first time authors.  The Postmortal is a book that deserved a solid write-up for me but I could never quite do justice, it begins as black comedy and takes a turn to noir that would have failed in the hands of a lesser writer but Drew Magary makes it work and even works in a good love story too. I adored this book. My second pick is the Sci-Fy war book Hunter S. Thompson would have penned if he wrote fiction, Germline is like Full Metal Jacket gone gonzo with a wicked love story, really. Warm Bodies is the zombie version of Romeo and Juliet and surprisingly magical.

  • 2011 Reading - New to Me in 2011 Top 10

New to me in 2011... it's a mash-up of Paranormal, Urban Fantasy, Science Fiction, Dystopian and Fantasy -- in otherwords, all of the stuff I really love to read.

    1. Joe Pitt Casebooks by Charlie Huston (PN/UF)
    2. The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms by N.K. Jemison (Fantasy)
    3. The Child Thief by Brom  (Fantasy/PN)
    4. First Blood Trilogy by Joe Abercrombie (Fantasy)
    5. An Echo In The Bone by Diana Gabaldon (Sci-Fy/Romance)
    6. Twelve by Jasper Kent (PN/Historical Fantasy)
    7. Shipbreaker by Paolo Bacigalupi (Dystopian Fantasy)
    8. Ex-Heroes by Peter Clines (Dystopian zombies and superheros)
    9. Black Magic Sanction by Kim Harrison (PN/UF)
    10. Johannes Cabal Necromancer by Jonathan L. Howard (Steampunk/PN)

... and Steph, I enjoyed the Greyfriar too. It didn't make my list because well, I already crammed some series into single line items, I have to draw a line somewhere. How was the second book in the series?

  • October "Toby" Daye -- Seanan McGuire

When you first meet Toby, I think the quality which Toby possesses in spades that makes her special and valuable to her friends is that she is resiliant and a fighter no matter the odds. She isn't openly loving but she does love and is loyal, she is honest and honorable and she tries so very hard to keep her word, even if her promise is beyond her abilities. When we first meet Toby she is mired in failure and loss -- and much of her personal battle is in finding a way to make peace and to stop beating herself up or blaming others' for their responses to her situation. Specifically, Toby has accepted that there are some aspects of life and society that you cannot change and must find a way to navigate. As for Cliff, I think he washed his hands of Toby when she returned because he didn't trust her, and how could he really, amnesia only plays in soap operas, he might be human but he's not stupid and something didn't add up -- you'll find out more later in the series about Cliff's opinion of the situation. As for the social issue with her blood and Connor's family -- think about it, if you've got a family with social aspirations and Connor does, they were looking for any reason to steer him towards a situation they could gain from, they had nothing to gain from Connor being with Toby because of her low status. Does this make sense? It was a case of two kids from the wrong side of the tracks and his family wanting to jump the third rail to the other side and they could not have him tied to her.
