  • Student Refuses to Recite Pledge

I thought this video was very impressive.  I have never heard of a ten year old speak with such passion and determination as he.  I was  surprised that he  was aware of these injustices at a  young age and knew enough to sit down to get his point across.  I was refreshing to hear a different argument about the pledge such as injustices, rather than having an issue with refer to God.  The boy has a point that everyone has to have equal rights.  I agree with what Amelia said in that it must have taken a lot of courage to do what he did.

  • What can Homelessness do to Children

I agree that homelessness can have a huge impact on children.  When I volunteer at the homeless center I just look at the babies and think of how different their childhood will be from mine.  They will be hit with many hard issues at a very young age and will be exposed to things that many of us to do realize until we are young adults.  Even though the children are in hard circumstances, I am still amazed by the kindness and love about them.  They instantly cling on to you and strike up a conversation.  I feel that maybe their home in the center has made them more resilient to some things in life.  Maybe they already realize the important things.  I would have to disagree with Michelle's comment of "This shows that as a homeless single person you learn that taking care of you and only you is your first priority."  I found this statement to be incorrect while at the homeless center.  I was amazed at how the families all help each other out.  It seems to be that it is a group effort of all the adults to take care of the children.  Adults come in to pick up others kids from day care and are all willing to have conversations with everyone.  I believe that some of them realize that they are going to survive and be happy only with the love and support of each other.

  • A New Kind of Poverty

I do not think that we are thinking about the myth correctly.  Ordinarily I believe that people understand that hard work is necessary to succeed, but in the point of view of a financially struggling person, hard work doe not mean you will be saved.  Financially struggling people are many times the hardest workers.  They put in the most time and effort into work, but the money never exceeds what the bare minimum needed.  They can never get ahead.  With this being said, "hard work provides rewards" may seem like a myth to them.  It is not saying that people believe that they should just be lazy because the hard work is not providing great wealth, but rather they are being discouraged because their work never provides enough.  I think that everyone should be in the place of a financially struggling family, and then you will realize that they are usually the most determined, hard working people who do not lose hope in hard work but rather the system of America.

  • Is Natural Family Planning so different from Birth Control?

I believe that there is a big difference between Natural Family Planning and Birth Control.  Michelle, you mention how you asked your grandparents how hard it was for them to abstain in times of desire or the most fertile times of the month.  They responded that it was difficult, but I believe that is part of being human.  We are faced with many difficult things, but we deal with it.  If a couple truly love each other, then abstaining from sexual relations for a bit can be dealt with, such as your grandparents did.  The planning that goes into NFP is also a way for the couple to become closer in their relationship because they are working together and appreciate the time of unity.   Though it may not be the most convenient or easiest thing to do, like many obstacles in life, NFP is a way to have sexual relations but not prevent birth.

In regards to Rebecca's comment of "I possibly worry about the couple's sexual relationship,"  the Church's support of NFP allows for the unity but not as frequently as some would like, but the opportunity of unity is still possible, so I do not find it to be much of a hinderance.

  • Taking A Moral Stance

I actually disagree with Rebecca, Christina, and Vanessa.  I believe that Bishop Myers had the stronger case.  Realistically, Governor Cuomo's comment that Roe vs. Wade will not be changed may be true.  Cuomo mentions how he wants to provide education about abortion, etc. but it still does not change the fact that he is letting pro-choose legislation pass him bye.  Cuomo, as a Catholic, has to stand up for his beliefs.  If he believes that abortion is wrong, then he has to do everything in his power to prevent it.  There is no point in having values in this world if you are going to not stand firm in them.  I recognize that he believes in the democracy of our government but he is not enforcing Catholic church doctrine on the country, but rather an issue of morality.  Rebecca states that "I sometimes struggle to incorporate my Catholic faith into other aspects of my life, I commend Cuomo for searching and sharing his 'moral stance."  The fact is that Cuomo does not incorporate his Catholic faith into his life.  If he did, then he would not be allowing women to have the option to abort their children.  It is a slippery slope and he is just making it easier for pro-choose people to win.  He needs to put up a fight and be Jesus' beacon in the world.  Its not the easy or most popular road, but its what needs to be done.

In regards to Vanessa's comment "I feel that Bishop Myers holds a very naive stance on abortion and forces us to choose our religious side over everything else. This is just unrealistic in today's society,"  I think that we should always choose our religious side.  Why would we not?   Our religion is what guides us in how to life out our life.  It is our morals and values and when we are faced with obstacles in life, we apply our religion to it.  It is unrealistic in  today's society because people like Cuomo do not stand firm in their faith when we are suppose to.  If the six supreme court justices actually lived out their faith, our country's abortion laws would be very different right now.

It is also not just about changing people's mind.  Its a personal issue.  One person may not change the world, but it matters if they did everything to the best of their ability to help the world.
